A method is described by which an artificial limb can be fitted as soon as an above-knee or below-knee amputation wound is healed, by using preformed sockets which enable the prosthetist to fit the limb within the hour. The method has been found safe, and better than other methods previously described to facilitate the early mobilisation and rehabilitation of the amputee.

The treatment of an above knee amputee who has sustained a fracture of femoral neck is a challenge for both the orthopaedic surgeon and the rehabilitation team. We present a case of such a patient and discuss different difficulties in his treatment.

This case study looks at a 71-year-old man who had 52 years of chronic lower limb pain and ulceration secondary to radiotherapy for an osteosarcoma. It discusses some issues surrounding amputation in such a case and raises early preoperative involvement by a multidisciplinary amputee rehabilitation team as a mandatory arm of management.
