Unilateral, below-knee amputees have altered gait mechanics, which can significantly affect their mobility. Below-knee amputees lose the functional use of the ankle muscles, which are critical during walking to provide body support, forward propulsion, leg-swing initiation and mediolateral balance. Thus, either muscles must compensate or the prosthesis must provide the functional tasks normally...
Patients with lower-limb amputations can have various musculoskeletal problems, such as osteoporosis in the amputated limb, and osteoarthritis in either ipsilateral or contralateral limb. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) in below-knee amputees (BKA) have been described previously. In lower limb amputee patients undergoing THA, there may be important preand intraoperative considerations and patients...

A method is described by which an artificial limb can be fitted as soon as an above-knee or below-knee amputation wound is healed, by using preformed sockets which enable the prosthetist to fit the limb within the hour. The method has been found safe, and better than other methods previously described to facilitate the early mobilisation and rehabilitation of the amputee.
Aim: It is aimed to examine the information content, readability, reliability, and quality levels of websites that provide online about amputee rehabilitation.

The treatment of an above knee amputee who has sustained a fracture of femoral neck is a challenge for both the orthopaedic surgeon and the rehabilitation team. We present a case of such a patient and discuss different difficulties in his treatment.
This case study looks at a 71-year-old man who had 52 years of chronic lower limb pain and ulceration secondary to radiotherapy for an osteosarcoma. It discusses some issues surrounding amputation in such a case and raises early preoperative involvement by a multidisciplinary amputee rehabilitation team as a mandatory arm of management.
