background although effective strategies have been presented for preventing the spread of antibiotic resistance in iran, recent reports have revealed increasing antibiotic resistance among children and adults. objectives in the present study, we tried to provide a clear view of the antibiotic resistance status of aerobic organism as the most prevalent organism in patients with rhinosinusitis in...

Strains of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (ESBL-KP) have emerged worldwide. Concomitant ciprofloxacin resistance with ESBL production in K. pneumoniae isolates would severely restrict treatment options. Among 39 (18.5%) of 211 ESBL-KP isolates resistant to ciprofloxacin (MIC, >/=4 micro g/ml), 37 (95%) were high level resistant (MIC, >/=16 micro g/ml). These is...

From January to March 1993, a suspected outbreak of antibiotic-associated diarrhea occurred on a pediatric oncology ward of the Clinical Center Hospital at the National Institutes of Health. Isolates of Clostridium difficile obtained from six patients implicated in this outbreak were typed by both PCR amplification of rRNA intergenic spacer regions (PCR ribotyping) and restriction endonuclease ...

Overuse and misuse of antibiotics leads to rapid evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes. Klebsiella pneumoniae has become the most common pathogenic bacterium accountable for nosocomial infections due to its high virulence factor and general occurrence of resistance to most antibiotics. The β-lactamase signaling pathway has been suggested to be involved in an...

We characterized 670 Clostridium difficile isolates collected from patients in 84 hospitals in Germany in 2008. PCR ribotyping showed high prevalence of ribotype 001 and restricted dissemination of ribotype 027 strains. Fluoroquinolone resistance and associated gyrase mutations were frequent in various ribotypes, but no resistance to metronidazole or vancomycin was noted.

A quantitative comparison between discriminatory indexes and concordance among multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis (MLVA), pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), automated ribotyping, and phage typing has been performed, testing 238 Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis isolates not epidemiologically correlated. The results show that MLVA is the best choice, but each typing m...
