background: to provide a point of reference to study the epidemiology and clin-ical expression of canine babesiosis in china. methods: a total of 30 dogs infected with canine babesiosis were evaluated by mean of clinical history, physical examination, hematological, restriction fragment length polymorphism of pcr products (pcr-rflp) and sequencing analysis. result: the most prevalent clinical a...
A gene encoding Babesia gibsoni thrombospondin-related adhesive protein (BgTRAP), known as a vaccine candidate, was stably expressed in Toxoplasma gondii (Tg/BgTRAP). The molecular weight and the antigenic reaction of recombinant BgTRAP expressed by the Tg/BgTRAP were similar to the original ones expressed by B. gibsoni. To evaluate the antigenicity of the recombinant BgTRAP expressed by T. gon...
Erythrocyte 5'-nucleotidase is thought to be involved in the maturation of erythrocytes. In the present study, in vitro incubation of canine erythrocytes demonstrated that significant inhibition of 5'-nucleotidase activity occurred in the presence of serum from dogs infected with Babesia gibsoni, when the enzyme was assayed with cytidine 5'-monophosphate (5'-CMP) and inosine 5'-monophosphate (5...
The efficacy of Malarone(®) alone and in combination with doxycycline (DOXY) against Babesia gibsoni infections was examined in 8 dogs. In all dogs except one treated with Malarone(®), parasitemia decreased, and anemia improved soon after initiation of treatment. However, 3 of 4 dogs treated with Malarone(®) relapsed, and relapse was inhibited in 2 of 4 dogs treated with Malarone(®) and DOXY. A...
Doxycycline sensitivity against in vitro cultured Babesia gibsoni was evaluated by real-time PCR and parasitemia. The culture of B. gibsoni was successfully continued and mean parasitemia was 4.63% when in vitro drug sensitivity test was started. The drug sensitivity test by the real-time PCR calculated the gene copy number from cultured sample. Even if the complete growth inhibition was at cer...
The inhibitory effect of an antiserum to surface protein P50 of Babesia gibsoni on the growth of the parasite was determined with severe combined immunodeficiency mice given canine red blood cells. The antiserum to the recombinant P50 protein significantly inhibited the parasite growth, indicating that P50 might be a useful vaccine candidate.
A total of 4190 blood smears were collected between January and December 2007 from dogs exhibiting clinical signs of haemoprotozoan infections. On blood smear examination 485 blood smears were found to be positive for various haemoprotozoa and rickettsia. Among the positive cases , the majority of haemoprotozoans identified were Babesia gibsoni 84.9%, followed by Ehrlichia canis 6 %, Hepatazoan...
The haemoprotozoan Babesia canis has been recognized in Australia for many years, and a second, smaller species has recently been discovered. Amplification and sequencing of a partial region of the 18S small subunit ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene enabled detection and characterization of the large and small canine babesiae of Australia for the first time. Isolates from northern Australia were geneti...
Antibodies that recognized either Babesia gibsoni or canine red blood cell (RBC) 70-kilodalton (kDa) protein were detected in serum from acutely and chronically B. gibsoni-infected. In those sera, antibodies that reacted with recombinant B. gibsoni and canine heat shock protein 70 (rBgHsp70 and rcHsp70) were detected; therefore, B. gibsoni and canine RBC 70-kDa proteins seemed to be BgHsp70 and...
To identify tick-borne pathogens in blood samples from 68 dogs were examined for Babesia, Anaplasma/Ehrichia, Mycoplasma, and Hepatozoon spp. by using a molecular tool. The detection of DNA was performed using specific primers for partial 16S rRNA or 18S rRNA sequence, and amplicon sequences were analyzed. Our investigation detected Babesia gibsoni (26 dogs) and Anaplasma sp. AnHl446 (2 dogs), ...
