An aromatic peptide amphiphile was designed for delivery of the signaling gas H2S. The peptide self-assembled in water into nanofibers that gelled upon charge screening. The non-toxic gel slowly released H2S over 15 hours, and the presence of H2S in endothelial cells was verified using a fluorescent H2S probe.

Alcohol-based gels have been introduced recently in many hospitals worldwide for hand antisepsis. We investigated the antimicrobial efficacy of ten gels and four rinses according to European standards (EN 1500). No gel met the EN 1500 requirements within 30 s of application, whereas all hand rinses did. The tested hand gels should be considered a retrograde step for hand hygiene because the app...

Background and Objectives: Making stacking gels for polyacrylamide gels in the laboratory by conventional methods is laborious and time consuming. Considering the role of temperature in polyacrylamide gels with respect to electrical resistance and viscosity, we assumed that decreasing the temperature would cause an increase in electrical resistance and viscosity.  Ultimately, a downward tempera...

Smart gels have a variety of applications, including tissue engineering and controlled drug delivery. Here we present a modular, bottom-up approach that permits the creation of protein-based smart gels with encoded morphology, functionality, and responsiveness to external stimuli. The properties of these gels are encoded by the proteins from which they are synthesized. In particular, the streng...

The aim of our study was to identify factors affecting the in vitro release diclofenac sodium (DS) from hypromellose-based gels (HPMC).
Materials and methods. Gels with HPMC liquids without were studied by viscosity-rotating viscometer method spin probe electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Rheograms used determine flow behavior apparent viscosity, EPR spectra rotational correlati...

Pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), the gold standard of molecular typing methods, has a major disadvantage of an unusually long electrophoretic time. From the original protocol of 6 days, it was modified to 3 days and subsequently to a single day. We describe the procedure of stacking five to six gels one on top of another in order to increase and maximize the output in a shorter time wit...

This paper undertakes a parallel analysis of the gelation mechanisms, structure and rheological properties of gelatin and collagen gels. Although the molecular compositions of collagen and gelatin are almost identical, gelation proceeds from distinct mechanisms and leads to different types of molecular assemblies. First are presented the properties of the solutions, based on their structural an...

Gels formed via metal-ligand coordination typically have very low branch functionality, f, as they consist of ∼2-3 polymer chains linked to single metal ions that serve as junctions. Thus, these materials are very soft and unable to withstand network defects such as dangling ends and loops. We report here a new class of gels assembled from polymeric ligands and metal-organic cages (MOCs) as jun...
