OBJECTIVES Bone replacement substitutes are almost unavoidable in augmentation procedures such as sinus grafting. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the osteoconductive capability of two different scaffold fillers in inducing newly formed bone in this procedure. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sinus floor augmentation and implant placement were carried out bilaterally in 12 patients. Bov...

In this paper, based on the homogeneous balance principle and two improved projective Riccati Equations, exact solutions to the general form of BBM equation and the generalized BBM-Burgers equation with nonlinear terms of any order are obtained, which include several kinds of solitary wave solutions and periodic wave solutions. Some of them are found for the first time.

Our aim was to compare the osteogenic potential of mononuclear cells harvested from the iliac crest combined with bovine bone mineral (BBM) (experimental group) with that of autogenous cancellous bone alone (control group). We studied bilateral augmentations of the sinus floor in 6 adult sheep. BBM and mononuclear cells (MNC) were mixed and placed into one side and autogenous bone in the other ...

The brush-border membrane (BBM) of enterocytes is responsible for the digestion and absorption of nutrients and ions in the small intestine. To identify the BBM proteins involved in epithelial cell maturation along the crypt-villus axis, enterocytes were sequentially isolated from the villus tip to the crypt of the jejunum from 21-day-old suckling piglets. After preparation of BBM vesicles, we ...

At the heart of this article will be the study of a branching Brownian motion (BBM) with killing, where individual particles move as Brownian motions with drift −ρ, perform dyadic branching at rate β and are killed on hitting the origin. Firstly, by considering properties of the right-most particle and the extinction probability, we will provide a probabilistic proof of the classical result tha...

Renal proximal tubular response to acute administration of a low Pi diet is characterized by a rapid adaptive increase in apical brush border membrane (BBM) Na-Pi cotransport activity and Na-Pi cotransporter protein abundance, independent of a change in Na-Pi cotransporter mRNA levels (Levi, M., M. Lötscher, V. Sorribas, M. Custer, M. Arar, B. Kaissling, H. Murer, and J. Biber. 1994. Am. J. Phy...

Studies were undertaken to characterize the mechanism of aminoglycoside-induced nephrotoxicity. Early time points in gentamicin treatment (1 to 3 d) were used to investigate the development of toxic events without the complication of gross morphologic cellular alterations. Enzyme activities of cortical homogenates and brush border membrane (BBM) preparations documented little effect on specific...

Reversible ischemia reduced renal cortical brush border membrane (BBM) Na'-dependent D-glucose uptake (336±31 vs. 138±30 pmol/mg per 2 s, P < 0.01) but hadno effect on Na'-independent glucose or Na'-dependent L-alanine uptake. The effect on D-glucose uptake was present after only 15 mm of ischemia and was due to a reduction in maximum velocity (1913±251 vs. 999±130 pmol/mg per 2 s; P < 0.01). T...

The dibasic amino acid, L-arginine, is a substrate for both nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and arginase and therefore, plays an important role in cell signaling and cell growth. We examined the effects of various NOS inhibitors on L-arginine transport into rat renal brush border membrane (BBM) vesicles. L-Arginine uptake was stimulated in the presence of an inwardly directed Na+ gradient and an im...

Erythrocyte membranes of patients with liver disease are characteristically enriched in cholesterol, a change known to impair several carrier-mediated membrane transport functions. In the present study we have assessed whether experimental liver disease can affect the membrane lipid composition and transport function of kidney epithelial cells. Small (about 5%) but significant (P less than 0.01...
