Pachytrechodes brevis Belousov & Nyundo, new species, is described from the Udzungwa Mountains, Tanzania. This species is the first member of the genus found outside of the Uluguru Mountains. A key to the four currently known species of Pachytrechodes is included, based on Uéno's (1987) key. The distribution of all species is mapped.
2014 One of the possible routes to turbulence is the intermittent transition. Below the onset of turbulence regular oscillations exist, and above the onset seemingly regular oscillations are interrupted randomly by large amplitude bursts. This behaviour shows up in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. Moreover an analysis of the measurements indicates that a so-called « type 1 » transition takes ...
A photosensitive self-oscillating gel that incorporates the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction can undergo rhythmic mechanical oscillations. We exploit the dependence of the oscillation frequency on light intensity to generate both photophobic and phototropic movement of the gel under differential illumination. Our findings may be used in designing intelligent sensors that can execute biomimetic beh...
A transition from rotating chemical spirals to turbulence is observed in experiments on the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. The transition occurs when the waves near the spiral tip spontaneously break, generating defects. Measurements reveal that this defect-mediated turbulence is caused by the Doppler effect on the traveling waves. The observations are in good accord with numerical simulations ...
Motivated by experimental observations in the light-sensitive Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction and subsequent numerical works, we discuss period-doubling bifurcations of spiral waves and other coherent structures. We report on explanations of the observed phenomena which involve a detailed analysis of spectra, and of the associated eigenfunctions, of defects on bounded and unbounded domains.
Turing structures, standing waves, oscillatory clusters, and accelerating waves have been found in the spatially extended Belousov-Zhabotinsky system dispersed in water droplets of a reverse AOT microemulsion. The variety of patterns is determined by the tunable microstructure of the medium, i.e., by the concentration and size of water droplets. We propose a simple model to describe this system.
