Co-assembled structures possessing tunable light emission from 510-690 nm have been prepared using various compositions of two different 4,7-substituted benzothiadiazole molecules, 1 and 2. The preferential incorporation and co-localization of 1 and 2 to produce co-assemblies are possible because of structural similarities and allow for tuning of morphology and light emission.

Coordination-driven gelation of a benzothiadiazole-fused tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) is demonstrated. This is the first work reporting highly stable metallogels based on a donor-acceptor conjugate with such a simple structure for the construction of new low-bandgap materials with various functional properties and novel nanostructures.

Novel A-D-A type oligothiophenes incorporating benzothiadiazole (BTDA) and thiadiazolopyridine (TDAPy) as terminal acceptor groups have been developed for small molecule organic solar cells (SMSC). In vacuum-processed planar heterojunction solar cells the TDAPy-based oligomer showed a power conversion efficiency of 3.15% and a high fill factor of 0.67.

Bis(fluorenyl)benzothiadiazole-cored carbazole dendrimers show high thermal and electrochemical stability, and great potential as solution processed hole-transporting non-doped green emitters for OLEDs. A pure green device with CIE coordinates of (0.27, 0.62) and high luminance efficiencies (up to 10.01 cd A(-1)) is achieved, respectively.

A new NbO-type metal-organic framework ZJNU-40 incorporating highly polarized benzothiadiazole moieties exhibits a high CO2 uptake of 108 cm(3) g(-1) at 296 K and 1 atm, as well as good adsorption selectivities of CO2 over CH4 and N2 at room temperature, which is superior to that of the analogous MOF NOTT-101.
