The treatment of bone loss due to different etiologic factors is difficult and many techniques aim to improve the repair, including a wide range of biomaterials and recently, photobioengineering. This work aimed to assess by histological analysis the repair of bone defects grafted with biphasic synthetic micro-granular HA + β-TCP associated with LED phototherapy. Forty rats were divided into 4 ...

The complement system is an important inflammatory mediator during procedures such as cardiopulmonary bypass and hemodialysis when blood is exposed to large areas of biomaterial surface. This contact between blood and the biomaterials of implants and extracorporeal circuits leads to an inflammatory response mediated by the complement system. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of a ...

A bone defect resulting from open bone trauma may easily become infected; however, the administration of efficacious systemic antibiotics cannot be performed at safe levels. Previous studies have investigated anti-infective biomaterials that incorporate into bone and facilitate the direct application of high-concentration local antibiotics. In the present study, the effect of a novel porous com...

The prospect of biomaterial hypersensitivity developing in response to joint implant materials was first presented more than 30 years ago. Many studies have established probable causation between first-generation metal-on-metal hip implants and hypersensitivity reactions. In a limited patient population, implant failure may ultimately be related to metal hypersensitivity. The examination of hyp...

BACKGROUND Adverse cardiac remodeling and progression of heart failure after myocardial infarction are associated with excessive and continuous damage to the extracellular matrix. We hypothesized that injection of in situ-forming alginate hydrogel into recent and old infarcts would provide a temporary scaffold and attenuate adverse cardiac remodeling and dysfunction. METHODS AND RESULTS We de...

Biomaterial-mediated gene delivery has recently emerged as a promising alternative to conventional gene transfer technologies that focus on direct delivery of viral vectors or DNA-polymer/matrix complexes. However, biomaterial-based strategies have primarily targeted transient gene expression vehicles, including plasmid DNA and adenovirus particles. This study expands on this work by characteri...

determination of blood compatibility is an important problem in blood contacting devices. in this study, two classes of materials including polyurethane (based on polyethylene glycol and poly tetrametylene oxide) and polyvinyl alcohol samples, with different hydrophilicity properties were synthesized and their physico-chemical properties were compared. water uptake ratio, ftir spectroscopy, and...

Prioritizing one function in biomaterial and biomedical device design goes hand in hand with compromises with respect to other functions. Strategies to overcome the limitations of such an approach for realizing novel fields of biomaterial application are critically evaluated to promote interdisciplinary and integrative research.

We report on the incorporation of microfluidic structure within a high-water-content hydrogel [4% (w/v) calcium alginate]. We used the microfluidic network to control the chemical environment within the hydrogel and demonstrated higher rates of delivery and extraction of solutes than was achievable by diffusion alone.

Recently, considerable progress has been made in designing biomaterial surfaces which possess enhanced albumin affinity. Two derivatization methods for producing albumin binding biomaterial surfaces, based on an albumin affinity dye, cibacron blue, have been developed. Both surface derivatization methods were found to enhance the binding of albumin to an implant grade polyetherurethane. Evaluat...
