background iron deficiency is one of the most prevalent anemia. 2 million people in the world suffer from it. all young girls are at higher risk for iron defiency anemia, therefore, diagnosis and prevention of this anemia in the young age is very important. materials and methods: a total of 1500 high school girls educated in five regions of education of mashhad (ages 14-18 years) were studied. c...

SUMMARY Giardia is a protozoan parasite which exists in the small intestine in man. This parasite could act as a barrier against fat absorption. It also results in anemia as a result of interference with folic acid vitamin B6 and probably iron absorption. In this study a total of 198 infested and 35 noninfested school children were studied for serum Iron and TIBC. The results showed the Iron...

Blood lead concentrations and body iron status were investigated in 279 children. Blood lead concentrations showed no increase during iron depletion phase (stage I) but markedly increased from the phase of iron deficient erythropoiesis (stage II). Increased blood lead concentrations in anaemic subjects significantly decreased after iron supplementation.

background: metals such as iron, zinc, and copper are critical and necessary for the survival of all living organisms, whereas xenobiotic metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic have no known biologic role. any metals in high doses can have toxic effects. the aim of this work was to evaluate the hematological changes induced by lead as a toxic metal and characterize the potential eff...

Iron deficiency is a major complication of regular blood donation as a result of regular iron loss from each donated blood unit. Ninety-two regular blood donors and 95 first time blood donors attending a hospital-based blood transfusion centre were assessed as to their haematological and iron status by blood counts and serum ferritin levels as an indicator of iron stores. All donors had passed ...

Iron oxide is an important biological agent that has a key role in medical processes; however, the mechanism whereby it provides iron for human and animal cells and its biological uses remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the effects of oral iron oxide on serum iron status and compare the results with those of iron sulfate as a reference salt. Fifteen adult rabbits were divided into 3 groups o...

Blood bankers have focused their energy to secure blood transfusion, and only recently have studies been published on the effect of blood donation on iron metabolism. In many facilities, hemoglobin measurement is only performed just before or even during blood donation, but the determination of iron stores is largely ignored. The 2013 paradox of transfusion medicine is due to the fact that bloo...

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this work was to assess the effect of severe maternal iron-deficiency anemia and nutritional status on cord blood and breast milk iron status. METHODS We conducted a prospective observational study over a 6-month period in a teaching hospital in central India. The study population consisted of 55 anemic (hemoglobin: < 110 g/L) and 20 healthy nonanemic (hemoglobin: > ...
