This thesis addresses sound production in bowed-string instruments from two perspectives: the physics of the bowed string, and bow control in performance. Violin performance is characterized by an intimate connection between the player and the instrument, allowing for a continuous control of the sound via the main bowing parameters (bow velocity, bow force and bowbridge distance), but imposing ...

Only very few cases of congenital anterolateral bowing of the fibula have been described in literature. We report a girl with congenital anterolateral bowing of the fibula with a 24 year follow-up. Asymptomatic bowing of her left leg below the knee was noted at the age of three years. Radiographs showed an isolated anterolateral bowing of the fibula with a normal ipsilateral tibia. Supervised n...

Introduction Traumatic bowing is a commonly missed diagnosis on which only little information is available, inadequate treatment can cause permanent function loss. Method A systematic review would determine what the effect is of treatment of traumatic bowing of the lower arm in children on the functional outcome. A search on Embase, Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane, Pubmed publisher,...

We present a probabilistic approach to modeling violin bowing gestures, for the purpose of synthesizing violin sound from a musical score. The gesture models are based on Gaussian processes, a principled probabilistic framework. Models for bow velocity, bow-bridge distance and bow force during a stroke are learned from training data of recorded bowing motion. From the models of bow motion durin...

A bowing is a sequence of bow motions that enable a piece of music to be played on a string instrument with an appropriate interpretation and sound. Traditional notation shows only the bow direction for a few notes. We propose a bowing model, which contains information about the bowings of all the notes, and we show how the bowing model can be represented in software and describe how algorithms...

Purpose The objective was to evaluate the relationship between side-to-side differences of lateral femoral bowing and varus knee deformity based on two-dimensional (2D) assessment in unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Materials and Methods A total of 143 patients with varus knee osteoarthritis who underwent unilateral TKA were enrolled. We evaluated the side-to-side differences of the ...

This paper presents a framework in which samples of bowing gesture parameters are retrieved and concatenated from a database of violin performances by attending to an annotated input score. Resulting bowing parameter signals are then used to synthesize sound by means of both a digital waveguide violin physical model, and an spectral-domain additive synthesizer.

We report four patients with unilateral bowing of the lower leg, affecting only the fibula. The bone is too long with anterolateral curvature of the distal third. Because of its regressive course and the absence of cutaneous involvement, this newly described entity can be distinguished from other forms of bowing of the leg.

Cello bowing techniques are classified by applying supervised machine learning methods to sensor data from two inertial sensors called the Orient specks – one worn on the playing wrist and the other attached to the frog of the bow. Twelve different bowing techniques were considered, including variants on a single string and across multiple strings. Results are presented for the classification o...

A pilot study is presented comparing the performance of complex bowing patterns of three violinists. Analysis of the movements revealed a subtle coordination between string crossings and bow changes in repetitive bowing patterns across two and three strings. Clear differences between the performances of the three players were found that could be interpreted in terms of consistency and efficienc...
