PURPOSE The aim of this paper is to report our experience in the creation of arteriovenous fistulas in children by using microsurgical vascular techniques, with emphasis on the details of the surgical technique. METHODS The children underwent surgery from July 1997 to March 2004. Operating loupes (magnification: 3.5X) were used by the entire surgical team. After dissection and adequate mobili...

INTRODUCTION A 59 year old woman presented with acute right leg ischemia. On the computed tomography scan, thrombi were seen in the brachiocephalic trunk, in the descending aorta, in the infrarenal aorta, in the right deep femoral artery, and in the right crural arteries. TECHNIQUE To remove the risk of cerebral emboli, thrombo-aspiration of the brachiocephalic trunk was planned, with associa...

Our goal was to establish a contrast injection technique that uses the unique vascular anatomy of the rabbit ear to spare the valuable femoral artery access sites. The central artery of the left ear was cannulated. Contrast injected in a retrograde fashion opacified the right brachiocephalic artery and its branches. The technique can be used in rabbits with the usual bovine-type left common car...

Adiponectin has been shown to have beneficial cardiovascular effects and to signal through the adiponectin receptors, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2. The original aim of this study was to investigate the effect of combined AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 deficiency (AdipoR1(-/-)AdipoR2(-/-)) on atherosclerosis. However, we made the interesting observation that AdipoR1(-/-) AdipoR2(-/-) leads to embryonic lethality de...

In prenatal and pediatric cardiovascular surgery knowledge of the various arrangements of the aortic arch and its branches as well as the normative data are essential. The variability and morphometric features of the brachiocephalic trunk in 131 human foetuses (65 male, 66 female) ranging from 15 to 34 weeks of gestation were studied by means of anatomical, digital and statistical methods. In a...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the hypothesis that COMP can influence the morphology, stability and size of murine atherosclerotic lesions. METHODS ApoE- and ApoE/COMP-knockout mice were fed a high-fat diet to develop atherosclerotic plaques at lesion sites of three different types; inflammatory and fibrous plaques induced in the carotid artery by low or oscillatory shear stress, respectively, and ...

This paper describes a rare case in which the left subclavian artery originates from a common stem arising from the aortic arch and splits into a brachiocephalic trunk and a left subclavian artery. The course of other large vessels of the aortic arch in this case are typical.
