This study evaluates the effect of three different bronchodilators (beta 2-adrenergic, anticholinergic and methylxanthine) alone and in randomized sequence, during an exacerbation in thirteen patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Dose-response curves were obtained for inhaled salbutamol and inhaled ipratropium bromide. The bronchodilator effect of a perfusion of aminophylline was...
The bronchodilator response to inhaled fenoterol (400 micrograms) was examined in the morning and in the afternoon before and during oral sustained-release aminophylline treatment in eight patients with chronic reversible airway obstruction. Bronchodilatation was evaluated by measuring serial peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) for eight hours after inhaled fenoterol and calculating the area unde...
Thirty asthmatic children, 5 to 14 years of age, 20 boys and 10 girls, were studied while having acute asthmatic attacks. Each group of 10 children received either a single dose of 6 puffs (1500 micrograms) or 3 doses of 2 puffs (500 micrograms) at 5-minute or 15-minute intervals of terbutaline pressurized aerosol inhaler through a 750-ml volumetric spacer. The onset of bronchodilatation was ob...
We examined the bronchodilator responses to inhalation of salbutamol (200 micrograms) and of ipratropium bromide (40 micrograms) in the morning and in the afternoon before and during a course of oral prednisolone (40 mg daily) in 15 patients with chronic, partly reversible airflow obstruction. Bronchodilatation was assessed by measuring serial peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) for six hours aft...
The effect of adding nebulised ipratropium bromide to bronchodilator treatment was studied in 20 patients with severe chronic airflow limitation. Maintenance theophylline with or without a steroid preparation was continued and comparison made between placebo, nebulised salbutamol, and a combination of nebulised salbutamol and ipratropium. Although the mean FEV1 values showed the combination to ...
A study was carried out to ascertain the most effective method of giving salbutamol. Seventeen children with severe asthma received active salbutamol (4 mg via a nebuliser, 400 micrograms as an inhalational powder, or a 4 mg tablet) together with complementary placebos on a double-blind, triple-dummy randomly allocated basis. The bronchodilatation effect was assessed by measuring the peak expir...
A double-blind crossover study was conducted in 10 stable asthmatics comparing 5 mg fenoterol with 5 mg salbutamol, both given via a Hudson nebulizer. Although both drugs caused significant bronchodilatation at the doses used, fenoterol had a significantly greater peak effect than salbutamol and its duration of action was 4 hr as opposed to 3 hr.
BACKGROUND The (R)-enantiomer of racemic albuterol (levalbuterol) has bronchodilatory properties whereas the (S)-enantiomer causes adverse effects in human airways, animal models, and isolated equine bronchi. Levalbuterol is commercially available and improves pulmonary function of asthmatic patients with a longer duration of effect than albuterol. OBJECTIVE To determine the dose at which inh...
