The cases of sixty patients in whom a burst fracture of a thoracic or lumbar vertebral body had been treated with posterior instrumentation and arthrodesis less than two weeks after the injury were retrospectively reviewed. Thirty of the patients had an associated laminar fracture. Eleven of the thirty, all of whom had a lumbar fracture and a preoperative neurological deficit, were noted at ope...

UNLABELLED INTRODUCTION Surgical treatment for lumbar burst fractures is complex and typically involves either a retroperitoneal corpectomy and/or a posterior pedicle screw fixation. We describe the case of a patient with a lumbar burst fracture who was cured via a less invasive approach that has not been previously reported as standalone treatment. CASE PRESENTATION This 25-year-old Cauca...

INTRODUCTION The reason we report this case is that spine injuries may well occur due to landmines similar to other injuries like traumatic limb amputations and more over they may be overlooked. CASE PRESENTATION The patient was 29-years-old Turkish male and was a member of the military. He detonated the landmine that caused his injuries while in a conflict zone. He had a right below knee and...

Rupture of the superior gluteal artery (SGA) is a rare complication. The SGA is vulnerable to injury during pelvic trauma due to its position in the sciatic notch. We report an unusual case of a successfully embolized SGA rupture in L2 burst fracture patient with blunt buttock contusion without associated pelvic fracture. A 45-year-old male was presented to the emergency room (ER) with L2 burst...

Burst fractures are common fractures resulting from impact loading and can have severe consequences such as neurological deficits [1]. The biomechanical process which leads to burst fracture is still debated. Finite element models (FEM) could further our knowledge on burst fracture mechanism. A precise evaluation of the mechanical properties of bone tissues is a critical issue when creating the...

Background To determine the relationship between superior disc-endplate complex injury and correction loss after surgery in a group of young adult patients with a stable thoracolumbar burst fracture. Methods The study group was comprised of young adult patients who had undergone short-segment posterior fixation and bone grafting under the diagnosis of a stable thoracolumbar burst fracture fro...

Eck and collaborators are to be congratulated for detailing an elegant treatment approach to thoracolumbar burst fractures in their ‘‘Minimally invasive corpectomy and posterior stabilization for lumbar burst fracture’’ case report [1]. Although satisfying, their report leaves us with questions that these authors (and the hundreds of contributors before them) have been unable to answer. Some of...

STUDY DESIGN A retrospective study. PURPOSE The aim of present study was to investigate imaging findings suggestive of cauda equina entrapment in thoracolumbar and lumbar burst fractures. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE Burst fractures with cauda equina entrapment can cause neurologic deterioration during surgery. However, dural tears and cauda equina entrapment are very difficult to diagnose clinic...

OBJECTIVE Vertebrae with lytic metastases have an elevated risk of burst fracture and resultant neurologic compromise. Prophylactic vertebroplasty has the potential to reduce pain and the risk of burst fracture in the metastatic spine. The purpose of this study was to quantify the ability of vertebroplasty to stabilize metastatically involved vertebrae against the risk of burst fracture initiat...

Vertebral angioma is a common bone tumor. We report a case of L1 vertebral angioma revealed by type A3.2 traumatic pathological fracture of the same vertebra. Management comprised emergency percutaneous osteosynthesis and, after stabilization of the multiple trauma, arterial embolization and percutaneous kyphoplasty.
