Seat belt legislation appears to have reduced mortality from, and the incidence of, serious head and facial injuries due to motor vehicle accidents. The use of seat belts has, however, also modified injury patterns in car occupants involved in accidents. This review traces the introduction of seat belt legislation and delineates the types of injury which have been attributed to seat belt wearing.
INTRODUCTION The behaviour of parents in ensuring car passenger safety for their children is associated with socio-economic (SE) status of the family; however, the influence of parental education has rarely been researched and the findings are contradictory. The aim of the study was to clarify whether parental education influences the use of a child car seat during short rides. METHODS A cros...
In road traffic accidents, a car-seat and its occupant can be subjected to various crash pulses in the case of a rear impact. This study investigates the influence of crash pulse shape on seat-occupant response and evaluates the corresponding risk of whiplash injury. For this purpose, a rigorously validated seat-occupant system model is used to study different carseat designs and crash pulses. ...
A hybrid system for detecting driver drowsiness was examined by using piezofilm movement sensors integrated into the car seat, seat belt and steering wheel. Statistical associations between increase in the driver drowsiness and the non-invasive and conventional physiological indicators were investigated. Statistically significant associations were established for the analysed physiological indi...
BACKGROUND Clothing is largely presumed as being the mechanism by which house dust mites are distributed among locations in homes, yet little research to date has investigated the capacity with which various clothing fabric types serve as vectors for their accumulation and dispersal. Although previous research has indicated that car seats provide a habitat for mite populations, dynamics involve...
We explored the factors influencing the use of age-appropriate car seats in a community with a high proportion of Aboriginal families in regional New South Wales. We conducted a survey and three focus groups with parents of children aged 3-5 years enrolled at three early learning centres on the Australian south-east coast. Survey data were triangulated with qualitative data from focus groups an...
OBJECTIVE Observe and report seat belt use among children transported in belt-positioning booster seats. DESIGN We conducted a cross-sectional, observational survey of children transported in motor vehicles between 2006 and 2007. While drivers completed a survey reporting the child's age, weight and gender, and the driver's age, gender, race, income, education, and relationship to the child; ...
children under 3 years of age must not travel in a car or goods vehicle (other than a taxi) unless restrained in the correct child seat. children aged 3 years or over who are under 150 cm in height and weighing less than 36 kilograms must use the correct child seat, booster seat or booster cushion. rearward-facing child car seats must never be used in the front passenger seat of cars with an ac...
In terms of the eVectiveness at the total population level, seat belts represent the front line of passive safety against death and serious injuries from passenger car crashes. They reduce by about 50% the risk of death and serious injury for car occupants; this knowledge, however, is not promptly translated into action and the frequency of seat belt use in the European Union member states vari...
