Seat belt legislation appears to have reduced mortality from, and the incidence of, serious head and facial injuries due to motor vehicle accidents. The use of seat belts has, however, also modified injury patterns in car occupants involved in accidents. This review traces the introduction of seat belt legislation and delineates the types of injury which have been attributed to seat belt wearing.

In road traffic accidents, a car-seat and its occupant can be subjected to various crash pulses in the case of a rear impact. This study investigates the influence of crash pulse shape on seat-occupant response and evaluates the corresponding risk of whiplash injury. For this purpose, a rigorously validated seat-occupant system model is used to study different carseat designs and crash pulses. ...

In terms of the eVectiveness at the total population level, seat belts represent the front line of passive safety against death and serious injuries from passenger car crashes. They reduce by about 50% the risk of death and serious injury for car occupants; this knowledge, however, is not promptly translated into action and the frequency of seat belt use in the European Union member states vari...
