Escherichia coli can form linear trails and move in a flagellum-independent manner on semisolid agar containing carbon sources. Trail formation seemed to correlate with the growth speed and/or carbon metabolism. Cell morphology in linear trails changed into larger cell sizes. We speculate that the flagellum-independent trail formation is a new mechanism for migration of E. coli cells.
beta-Aryl eliminations from a series of iminyl complexes to form rhodium aryl complexes and free nitriles are reported. Iminyl complexes [Rh(PEt3)3(N=CArAr')] were prepared from [Rh(COE)Cl]2, PEt3, LiN(SiMe3)2, and the imines HN=CArAr'. One example of these complexes was characterized by X-ray diffraction. Heating of these complexes in cyclohexane generated the rhodium aryl complexes and free n...
The processes by which single-wall carbon nanohorns are transformed by iron nanoparticles at high temperatures to form "nanooysters", hollow graphene capsules containing metal particles that resemble pearls in an oyster shell, are examined both experimentally and theoretically. Quantum chemical molecular dynamics (QM/MD) simulations based on the density-functional tight-binding (DFTB) method we...
Using the density functional theory calculations, we show that oxygen groups exhibit unexpected spontaneously dynamic behaviors on interior surface of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). Two types migrations - hydroxyl and epoxy are achieved by breaking/reforming C-O bond reaction proton transfer reaction. It is demonstrated characteristic attributed to sharply reduced energy barrier less t...
Carbenes represent a special class of reactive compounds that possess a lone pair of electrons on a carbon atom. Among the myriad examples of carbenes in the literature, cyclobutylidene stands out as a unique nonclassical compound that includes transannular interaction between opposing C1 and C3 carbon atoms within a four-membered ring. On its lowest potential energy surface (X[combining tilde]...
Photon irradiation has been repeatedly suspected of increasing tumor cell motility and promoting locoregional recurrence of disease. This study was set up to analyse possible mechanisms underlying the potentially radiation-altered motility in medulloblastoma cells. Medulloblastoma cell lines D425 and Med8A were analyzed in migration and adhesion experiments with and without photon and carbon io...
Two 4-silyl-3-buten-2-ones, 2a and 2c, underwent an interesting rearrangement involving migration of the allyl or phenyl group on the silicon atom to the adjacent enone carbon when treated with various bases.
Calculations of fluorine binding and migration on carbon nanotube surfaces show that fluorine forms varying surface superlattices at increasing temperatures. The ordering transition is controlled by the surface migration barrier for fluorine atoms to pass through next neighbor sites on the nanotube, explaining the transition from semi-ionic low coverage to covalent high coverage fluorination ob...
1,3-Enynes containing allylic hydrogens cis to the alkyne are shown to act as one-carbon partners, rather than two-carbon partners, in various rhodium-catalyzed oxidative annulations. The mechanism of these unexpected transformations is proposed to occur through double C-H activation, involving a hitherto rare example of the 1,4-migration of a Rh(III) species. This phenomenon is general across ...
The purpose of food packaging is to preserve the quality and safety of the food it contains from the time of manufacture to the time it is used by the consumer. Recently, the demand for safe and high quality foods, as well as changes in consumer preferences have led to the development of innovative and novel approaches in food packaging technology. One such development is the active food packag...
