Single- and multiwalled carbon nanotubes have been covalently functionalized with free-base porphyrin. The quantity of porphyrin linked to the surface was determined from thermogravimetric and UV-vis analysis. A reversible protonation equilibrium between the attached porphyrin and the residual acid groups of the carbon nanotubes has been identified. Steady-state fluorescence emission spectrum o...

We have fabricated field-effect transistors from carbon nanotubes using a novel selective placement scheme. We use carbon nanotubes that are covalently bound to molecules containing a hydroxamic acid functionality. The functionalized nanotubes bind strongly to basic metal oxide surfaces, but not to silicon dioxide. Upon annealing, the functionalization is removed, restoring the electronic prope...

Herein we report on the facile preparation of brominated SWCNTs based on two complementary reductive activation routes. The respective brominated SWCNTs are highly reactive and can be used in nucleophilic substitution reactions and represent versatile starting materials for the generation of sidewall functionalized SWCNTs with a high density of functional moieties.

Calculations of fluorine binding and migration on carbon nanotube surfaces show that fluorine forms varying surface superlattices at increasing temperatures. The ordering transition is controlled by the surface migration barrier for fluorine atoms to pass through next neighbor sites on the nanotube, explaining the transition from semi-ionic low coverage to covalent high coverage fluorination ob...

To interact with different biologic systems for biomedical applications, chemical modification of carbon nanotubes is always a key step. Disulfide is sensitive to the reductive intracellular environment, and such stimulus-responsive covalent bonds were used to modify carbon nanotubes. After deprotection of N-tert-butoxycarbonyl (Boc) groups of the N-(tert-butyloxycarbonyl) cystamine modified mu...

Covalent sidewall functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) via photoreduction of aromatic ketones by alcohols is reported for the first time. Irradiation of benzophenone, benzhydrol and SWNTs in benzene resulted in covalent attachment of benzhydrol to the sidewalls of the SWNTs. A variety of tools were used to characterize the functionalized SWNTs. Raman scattering, UV-visibl...

Carboxylic functionalization (-COOH groups) of carbon nanotubes is known to improve their dispersion properties and increase the electrical conductivity of carbon-nanotube-polymer nanocomposites. We have studied experimentally the effects of this type of functionalization on the thermal conductivity of the nanocomposites. It was found that while even small quantities of carbon nanotubes (~1 wt ...

In this study, we investigated the chemical functionalization of carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT–COOH) by 1-Amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid (ANSA). The functionalized MWCNTs exhibited good aqueous solubility due to the presence of the –OH and – SO3H groups of ANSA. The antimicrobial activity of the MWCNT–COOH as well as its functionalized multiwall nanotube MWCNT-CO-2-(1-amino...

Functionalization of nanomaterials for precise biomedical function is an emerging trend in nanotechnology. Carbon nanotubes are attractive as multifunctional carrier systems because payload can be encapsulated in internal space whilst outer surfaces can be chemically modified. Yet, despite potential as drug delivery systems and radiotracers, such filled-and-functionalized carbon nanotubes have ...
