All-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) are a promising next-generation battery technology. They exhibit high energy density, while mitigating intrinsic problems such as polysulfide shuttling and lithium dendrite growth that common to liquid electrolyte-based batteries. Among the various types of solid electrolytes, polymer electrolytes (SPE) attractive due their superior flexibility...

Nonaqueous redox flow batteries (NRFBs) represent an attractive technology for energy storage from intermittent renewable sources. In these batteries, electrical energy is stored in and extracted from electrolyte solutions of redox-active molecules (termed catholytes and anolytes) that are passed through an electrochemical flow cell. To avoid battery self-discharge, the anolyte and catholyte so...

Hydrogen gas can be electrochemically produced in microbial reverse-electrodialysis electrolysis cells (MRECs) using current derived from organic matter and salinity-gradient energy such as river water and seawater solutions. Here, it is shown that ammonium bicarbonate salts, which can be regenerated using low-temperature waste heat, can also produce sufficient voltage for hydrogen gas generati...

Recently developed man-made structures have caused environmental pollutions, and unfortunately, in spite of the deteriorating affairs and repeated warnings by scientists and experts, the degree of contamination is increasing considerably. One of the natural sources undergoing changes is the coasts. It is mainly due to human activities which have led to a change in the quality and quantity of se...

An apparatus has been built with which the intensity of a light-beam passing at grazing incidence over a platinum electrode can be monitored. The absorption of light which occurs during the electrolysis of dilute aqueous metal ion solutions has been studied as a function of a number of parameters including wavelength, potential difference and concentration. The theories of metal deposition and ...

This work presents a paper-based membraneless microfluidic fuel cell. The device benefits from the laminar flow occurring in a porous material by capillarity to separately react with two parallel streams, anolyte and catholyte, without a separating membrane. Unlike conventional microfluidic fuel cells, the present device does not require external pumps or any other ancillary devices to operate,...

We report a novel microfluidic microbial fuel cell (μMFC) with an improved design of 3D bioanode. The device features a highly conductive, multilayered nanofibrous anode providing a porous scaffold structure favorable for microbial attachment, mass transfer, and electron collection. The anolyte and catholyte chambers have a small volume of 2 μL each, and are separated by a proton exchange membr...

This work examines a pH control method using ammonium (NH(4)(+)) as a sustainable proton shuttle in a CEM-equipped BES. Current generation was sustained by adding NH(3) or ammonium hydroxide (NH(4)OH) to the anolyte, controlling its pH at 7. Ammonium ion migration maintained the catholyte pH at approximately 9.25. Such NH(4)(+)/NH(3) migration accounted for 90±10% of the ionic flux in the BES. ...

Electrochemical CO2 reduction is a promising carbon capture and utilization technique, which urgently required to prevent earth’s global warming. Extensive research on catalyst improvement, reactor engineering electrode development has been performed in order develop an industrially scalable system. However, despite the great process that made, there still lack of understanding fundamental beha...

High current densities have been obtained by bioanodes in electrochemical cells, but this performance has not previously translated into higher power microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The most critical factor for boosting generation MFCs was proven here to be OH– ion transfer from the cathode bioanode comparing of an MFC with anion exchange membrane (AEM), a near zero-gap configuration and no bulk c...
