The concentration of digoxin in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of ten patients receiving conventional oral doses of this cardiac glycoside has been measured by a radioimmunoassay technique. Digoxin was undetected in eight patients and barely detectable in two, suggesting the presence of a significant blood-CSF barrier for digoxin. The implication of these findings is discussed.
The knowledge of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) physiology is mainly presented in hypotheses. Today there are two relevant hypotheses on CSF physiology; the classic one, known as the third circulation (1,2), and the new one (3-5). The classic hypothesis is still predominantly present in medical and scientific literature, and new experimentalbased knowledge is unfortunately still not sufficiently inv...
In some patients with spontaneous spinal CSF leaks, leaks are numerous or tears are so large that extrathecal myelographic contrast material is seen at multiple levels during CT, making identification of their source impossible. This study introduces a dynamic CT myelographic technique that provides high temporal and spatial resolution. In this technical note, we describe the utility of this te...
The distribution of abacavir into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was assessed by use of a population pharmacokinetic analysis. Plasma and CSF abacavir concentrations in 54 subjects were determined. The abacavir CSF/plasma ratio averaged 36% and increased throughout the dose interval. Abacavir penetrates into the CSF in adequate concentrations to inhibit local human immunodeficiency virus replica...
Cerebrospinal fluid leaks pose a serious threat to patients as they represent an unchecked communication between the subarachnoid space and the extracranial environment. Accurate localization of the leakage site is essential for treatment planning. We describe the novel utilization of dual-energy computed tomography technology in cisternography in the evaluation of a patient with a cerebrospina...
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea is often intermittent, thus complicating the cisternographic localization of the leakage. In four patients studied, this difficulty was overcome by lumbar infusion of artificial CSF to which a bolus of radionuclide was added. The tracer was moved in bulk to the basal cisterns, and the rise in CSF pressure elicited a profuse rhinorrhea. Sequential imaging was...
INTRODUCTION Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid leakage is usually caused by developmental abnormalities and is rare, accounting for approximately 5% of the cases of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage. To the best of our knowledge, clival dysplasia-caused CSF rhinorrhea has never been reported in the neurosurgical field. CONCLUSION Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea is often treated by su...
Yawning is a behavior to which little research has been devoted. However, its purpose has not yet been demonstrated and remains controversial. In this article, we propose a new theory involving the brain network that is functional during the resting state, that is, the default mode network. When this network is active, yawning manifests a process of switching to the attentional system through i...
Aim of this report is to describe the long-term results of endoscopic endonasal repair of cerebrospinal fluid leak using a septal mucoperichondrial graft. A case series of 52 patients operated for cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea between 1990 and 2006 is presented. All patients underwent surgical treatment for endoscopic endonasal closure of a cerebrospinal fluid leak using a septal mucoperichond...
The authors review a prospectively accrued database of consecutive patients to assess the effectiveness of the off‐label routine use of intrathecal fluorescein to detect an intraoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak during endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery. Patients were pretreated with intravenous dexamethasone and diphenhydramine prior to administration of 25 mg of fluorescein inject...
