Psittacosis, also known as parrot fever and ornithosis, is a bacterial infection that can cause severe pneumonia and other serious health problems in humans. It is caused by Chlamydia psittaci. Reclassification of the order Chlamydiales in 1999 into 2 genera (Chlamydia and Chlamydophila) was not wholly accepted or adopted. This resulted in a reversion to the single, original genus Chlamydia, wh...

Mouse fibroblasts (L cells) were incubated for 5 h with 1,000 U of murine fibroblast interferon (MuIFN alpha+ beta) per ml and then were infected with either Chlamydia trachomatis (LGV 440), C. psittaci (6BC), or C. psittaci (Cal 10). Intracellular development of C. trachomatis was reduced 90% in interferon-treated cells 24 h after infection when compared with controls, whereas C. psittaci grow...

The Immunocomb (IC) ELISA test and immunofluorescence (IF) microscopy were compared on their ability to diagnose Chlamydia psittaci infection. Birds with and without clinical signs suggestive of chlamydiosis were tested. Although both test methods can detect infection by C. psittaci, the IC test is more convenient and provides the benefit of "on site" laboratory testing.

Ocular adnexal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (OA-MALT) lymphoma is one of the B malignancies that originates in orbit and shows indolent progression with a predominantly localized stage. Radiotherapy appears to be recognized as most common treatment for OA-MALT lymphoma. Surgical resection, eradication Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci) based on reports existence C. We developed a nested, multiplex PCR for simultaneous detection of three species of chlamydiae in human and avian specimens. The PCR was designed to increase sensitivity and to circumvent inhibitors of PCR present in clinical specimens. The target sequence was the 16S rRNA gene. The first-step PCR was genus specific, and the second-step PCR was multiplexed (i.e., had multiple primer sets in the...

Chlamydiae are intracellular, gram-negative, and prokaryotic microorganisms. Capable of causing disease in many mammalian avian species, there three types that cause humans: Chlamydia trachomatis, pneumoniae, psittaci. Among the chlamydia C. trachomatis is most studied encountered type because it a leading trachoma sexually transmitted diseases. known pathogen genital tract, can also be routine...

The influence of the microtubule-associated motor protein kinesin on Chlamydia psittaci inclusion development in epithelial and fibroblast cell lines was addressed. Kinesin was blocked early after chlamydial internalization (4 h postinfection [p.i.]) and before the initiation of active chlamydial multiplication (8 h p.i.). Chlamydia development was monitored by fluorescence and transmission ele...

The recent literature shows that interest in ocular adnexal lymphomas and their biologic and clinical characteristics--along with their possible association with Chlamydia psittaci infection and therapeutic management with rituximab or anti-Chlamydia psittaci antibiotic therapy--is considerable. These new data have modified the previously reported features of this disease and have made an updat...
