A Silastic nerve cuff containing colchicine (1% w/v) was placed around the combined lingualchorda tympani nerve of the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) to evaluate the role of axonal transport in the maintenance of taste buds. After 3 days the summated gustatory impulse discharges recorded from the chorda tympani nerve were reduced by 60%, while compound action potentials had not change...

This was a 45-year-old woman that initially consulted for a progressive hearing loss and dizziness of some 6 months of evolution. There were no notable relevant antecedents, while in the physical examination the otoscopy showed a greyish image that protruded in the posterior tympanic areas (Fig. 1a). The preoperative audiometry reflected a nixed right hearing loss with a mean loss in conversati...

Chorda tymapni, branch of facial nerve arising from its vertical segment is at risk throughout its course during middle ear and mastoid surgeries. We observed an unusual course of the nerve during tympanoplasty. Course of nerve was carefully observed and compared with previous studies. This is the first case to best of our knowledge describing such an unusual course of chorda tympani nerve.

The time course of structural changes in fungiform papillae was analyzed in rats that received unilateral chorda tympani nerve transection at 10 days of age. Morphological differences between intact and denervated sides of the tongue were first observed at 8 days postsection, with an increase in the number of fungiform papillae that did not have a pore. In addition, the first papilla with a fil...

Beidler's work in the 1950s showed that anions can strongly influence gustatory responses to sodium salts. We have demonstrated "anion inhibition" in the hamster by showing that the chorda tympani nerve responds more strongly to NaCl than to Na acetate over a wide range of concentrations. Iontophoretic presentation of Cl- and acetate to the anterior tongue elicited no response in the chorda tym...

5'-Ribonucleotides such as sodium 5'-inosinate (5'-IMP) , sodium 5'-guanylate (5'-GMP) and sodium 5'-xanthylate possess strong flavor-enhancing ability for humans when they are added in a minute quantity to monosodium glutamate (MSG), but little enhancement of taste occur by the addition of sodium 5'-uridylate (5'-UMP) and 5'-cytidylate (5'-CMP) to MSG5). ADACHI1) showed enhancement of the resp...

In long-term two-bottle tests, mice from the C57BL/6ByJ (B6) strain drink more monosodium L-glutamate (MSG) and inosine-5'-monophosphate (IMP) compared with mice from the 129P3/J (129) strain. The goal of this study was to assess the role of afferent gustatory input in these strain differences. We measured integrated responses of the mouse chorda tympani and glossopharyngeal nerves to lingual a...
