In this paper we show that every ideal with linear quotients is componentwise linear. We also generalize the Eliahou-Kervaire formula for graded Betti numbers of stable ideals to homogeneous ideals with linear quotients.

In this paper we present an example of a refinement equation such that up to a multiplicative constant it has a unique compactly supported distribution solution while it can simultaneously have a compactly supported componentwise constant function solution that is not locally integrable. This leads to the conclusion that in general the componentwise polynomial solution cannot be globally identi...

In this paper, we study the minimal free resolution of lex-ideals over a Koszul toric ring. In particular, we study in which toric ring R all lexideals are componentwise linear. We give a certain necessity and sufficiency condition for this property, and show that lex-ideals in a strongly Koszul toric ring are componentwise linear. In addition, it is shown that, in the toric ring arising from t...

Perturbation bounds in numerical linear algebra are traditionally derived and expressed using norms. Norm bounds cannot reflect the scaling or sparsity of a problem and its perturbation, and so can be unduly weak. If the problem data and its perturbation are measured componentwise, much smaller and more revealing bounds can be obtained. A survey is given of componentwise perturbation theory in ...

The condition number of a problem measures the sensitivity of the answer to small changes in the input, where “small” refers to some distance measure. A problem is called illconditioned if the condition number is large, and it is called ill-posed if the condition number is infinity. It is known that for many problems the (normwise) distance to the nearest ill-posed problem is proportional to th...

We consider a general class of structured matrices that includes (possibly confluent) Vandermonde and Vandermonde-like matrices. Here the entries in the matrix depend nonlinearly upon a vector of parameters. We define condition numbers that measure the componentwise sensitivity of the associated primal and dual solutions to small componentwise perturbations in the parameters and in the right-ha...

This chapter describes componentwise Least Squares Support Vector Machines (LS-SVMs) for the estimation of additive models consisting of a sum of nonlinear components. The primal-dual derivations characterizing LS-SVMs for the estimation of the additive model result in a single set of linear equations with size growing in the number of data-points. The derivation is elaborated for the classific...
