Dormancy (diapause) is a key life-history strategy of pelagic copepods that allows them to thrive in highly seasonal environments. Successful dormancy of copepodid stages requires the ability to store energy efficiently (for example as lipids) and to slow down the rate of mobilization of this capital during the dormant period. The physiology of lipids in copepods has been extensively reviewed; ...
INTRODUCTION Cyclopid copepods are known to be good mosquito controllers, specially as regards the larvae of the dengue vectors Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus. MATERIAL AND METHOD The objective of the study was to survey the local copepod fauna and search for new strains of M. longisetus var. longisetus, comparing the potential of the samples found with the current strain ML-01 against Ae. ...
Percentage composition of protein, lipid, carbohydrate and amino acids of copepods, Acartia spinicauda and Oithona similis collected from Parangipettai coastal waters were estimated following standard methodologies. Of the principal biochemical constituents, protein formed the major component followed bylipid and carbohydrate. Biochemical composition analysis of wild copepods indicated their nu...
In the present study, we determine the presence of parasites in fish larvae collected from nearshore waters along the northern and central coast of Chile. The parasites were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level based on morphological and molecular analyses. The fish sample was composed of 5 574 fish larvae. Of these, 3% harboured only larval ectoparasitic copepods whereas no endopa...
Phytol-U-14C was adsorbed on algae and ingested in this form by zooplanktonic copepods (two species of Culunus). The lipids of these animals were analyzed after 48 hr and found to contain radioactive pristane and radioactive phytanic acid. The conversion of phytol to pristane by the copepods is interpreted as a likely biological source of pristane in nature.
Our current knowledge on the microbial component of zooplankton diet is limited, and it is generally assumed that bacteria-sized prey is not directly consumed by most mesozooplankton grazers in the marine food webs. We questioned this assumption and conducted field and laboratory studies to examine picocyanobacteria contribution to the diets of Baltic Sea zooplankton, including copepods. First,...
Copepods are known as important consumers of primary production and are eaten by larger animals. They therefore form a main link to higher trophic levels. While feeding pathways and specificity of planktonic copepods have been well studied, the selectivity of the benthic harpacticoid copepods is far less documented. A better knowledge of the functional ecology of harpacticoids as important graz...
1. Increasing blooms of Microcystis aeruginosa have unknown impacts on the copepods Eurytemora affinis and Pseudodiaptomus forbesi, which are the dominant zooplankters and key prey species for endangered larval fish in the upper San Francisco Estuary. 2. Laboratory feeding experiments were designed to measure the effect of Microcystis on copepod survival and to distinguish the effects of toxici...
This study describes the distribution and aspects of the ecology of Lamproglena hoi. Bushveld small-scale yellowfish, Labeobarbus polylepis (Boulenger, 1907) were collected during June 2006 from the Phongolo and Assegaai rivers, March 2005 and October 2006 from the Elands River, and January 2007 and June 2008 from the Komati River in Mpumalanga, South Africa and examined for the presence of par...
Purple sulfur bacteria are photosynthetic, anaerobic microorganisms that fix carbon dioxide using hydrogen sulfide as an electron donor; many are also nitrogen fixers. Because of t h e ~ r requirements for sulfide or orgamc carbon as electron donors in anoxygenic photosynthesis, these bacteria are generally thought to be l im~ted to shallow, organic-nch, anoxic environments such as subtidal mar...
