Topological Defects like magnetic monopoles, cosmic strings, domain walls, etc., could have formed during symmetry breaking phase transitions in the early universe. We give an overview of the implications of topological defects for cosmology, with particular emphasis on their possible role as sources of the extremely high energy cosmic rays detected in several recent cosmic ray experiments; the...
A cosmic ray tracking telescope has been made for the measurement of cosmic rays from different directions, especially those received from the sun direction. Our observations by the telescope shows a noticeable deficiency in the detected number of cosmic rays entering the telescope when its axis was pointing to the sun compared to that entering the telescope with no sun in its field of view. Th...
The interior of the Universe is permeated by a tenuous space-filling frothy network. Welded into a distinctive foamy pattern, galaxies accumulate in walls, filaments and dense compact clusters surrounding large near-empty void regions. As borne out by a large sequence of computer experiments, such weblike patterns in the overall cosmic matter distribution do represent a universal but possibly t...
In the context of supersymmetric models, we analyze the production of topological defects at the end of inflation driven by a conjugate pair of inflaton fields which are non-singlets under the continuous symmetry group of the theory. We find that magnetic monopoles of mass on the order of 10 13 GeV can survive inflation and be present in our galaxy at an observable level. We also consider cosmi...
We study topological defects arising in the Grand Unification Model SU (6) L ⊗SU (6) c ⊗SU (6) R ×Z 3. We show that the model does not contain domain walls, while it produces massive magnetic monopoles and it may, depending on the symmetry breaking chain, give rise to the formation of strings. We also discuss their possible relation with the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays detected.
I briefly describe a new class of soliton configurations in field theories. These consist of topological defects which can end when they intersect other defects of equal or higher dimensionality. Such configurations may be termed “Dirichlet topological defects”, in analogy with the D-branes of string theory. I provide a specific example cosmic strings that terminate on domain walls and discuss ...
