Cpl-1, a pneumococcal phage lytic enzyme, was tested in rats with experimental endocarditis due to Streptococcus pneumoniae WB4. High-dose regimen Cpl-1 eliminated pneumococci from blood within 30 min and decreased bacterial titers in vegetations (>4 log10 CFU/g) within 2 h. Rapid bacterial lysis induced by Cpl-1 treatment increased cytokine secretion noticeably.

Abnormal growth and development of lymphatic pulmonary structures leads to severe hypoxia in congenital pulmonary lymphangiectasis (CPL). This case study aims to determine the cellular source and topographical distribution of the nitric oxide synthases in CPL. It studies the post mortem tissue of a term newborn with the clinical course and histological findings of CPL and three controls without...

Abst ract Query languages and their optimizations have been a very important issue in the database community. Languages for updating databases, however, have not been studied to the same extent, although they are clearly important since databases must change over time. The structure and expressiveness of updates is largely dependent on the data model. In relational databases, for example, the u...

A judicious change in the selected transition used for circular polarization excitation will overcome the low oscillator strength limitation of the currently allowed magnetic-dipole (5)D1 <-- (7)F2 (Eu(III)) transition chosen for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurement. The proposed allowed magnetic-dipole (5)D1 <-- (7)F0 (Eu(III)) transition will facilitate the detection of CPL fro...

BACKGROUND Congenital pulmonary lymphangiectasis (CPL) characterized by dilatation of pulmonary lymphatic vessels occurs as a congenital anomaly. With poor prognosis, neonatal presentation of bilateral CPL is associated with the severe compromise of pulmonary gas exchange and high mortality. METHODS A male infant born at 39 weeks of gestation was found to have CPL. Cyanosis and cardiac arrest...

The ability to photoinduce enantiomeric excess from the chirality of circularly polarized light (CPL) is pertinent to the study of the origin of homochirality in biomolecules. Such CPL-induced reactions, including both chirality generation and formation of partial enantiomeric imbalance, from nonchiral starting compounds have been known, however, only for the conversion of diarylolefins into ch...

This paper describes how the programming language BCPL developed from the work on the design and implementation of CPL. It shows that BCPL is essentially just CPL with all the difficult bits removed and with just a few extensions. The CPL project lasted from early 1962 to December 1966 and the first outline of BCPL appeared in 1966. Its first compiler was implemented at MIT in early 1967 and, s...

Endolysins comprise a novel class of selective antibacterials refractory to develop resistances. The Cpl-7 endolysin, encoded by the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteriophage Cp-7, consists of a catalytic module (CM) with muramidase activity and a cell wall-binding module (CWBM) made of three fully conserved CW_7 repeats essential for activity. Firstly identified in the Cpl-7 endolysin, CW_7 motif...

This paper describes the development of OCPL (object conceptual prototyping language), an object±knowledge representation language. The language is based on CPL, conceptual prototyping language, developed at the Free University of Amsterdam. CPL has been extended to allow for the explicit representation of object-oriented constructs. These constructs include facilities for application system de...

The effects of Carica papaya leaf (CPL) aqueous extract on alcohol induced acute gastric damage and the immediate blood oxidative stress level were studied in rats. The results showed that gastric ulcer index was significantly reduced in rats pretreated with CPL extract as compared with alcohol treated controls. The in vitro studies using 2,2-Diphenyl-1-Picryl-Hydrazyl (DPPH) assay showed stron...
