Regulation of the cellular volume is fundamental for cell survival and function. Deviations from equilibrium trigger dedicated signaling and transcriptional responses that mediate water homeostasis and volume recovery. Cells are densely packed with proteins, and molecular crowding may play an important role in cellular processes. Indeed, increasing molecular crowding has been shown to modify th...
The great pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis, is commonly used as a model species to study how stress affects the ability to form long-term memory (LTM); however, we still have little information about how the snail senses stressful stimuli. The osphradium is an external sensory organ that demonstrates electrophysiological responses to a variety of external chemical stimuli. We examined the role, if...
Research on physiological stress and post-capture mortality of threatened species caught as bycatch is critical for the management of fisheries. The present study used laboratory simulations to examine the physiological stress response of sparsely spotted stingarees (Urolophus paucimaculatus) subjected to one of four different trawl treatments, including two different trawl durations as well as...
As a first step toward the genetic mapping of QTL affecting stress response variation in rainbow trout, we performed complex segregation analyses (CSA) fitting mixed inheritance models of plasma cortisol by using Bayesian methods in large full-sib families of rainbow trout. To date, no studies have been conducted to determine the mode of inheritance of stress response as measured by plasma cort...
comparison of extraction and non-extraction orthodontic treatment using the objective grading system
statement of problem: the extraction versus non-extraction debate is almost as old as the advent of orthodontic practice and up to now, this dilemma remains. recently, the american board of orthodontics (abo) has developed a method by the name of objective grading system (ogs) in order to evaluate the results of orthodontic treatment. aim: the aim of the present study was to evaluate and compar...
Population size is often regulated by negative feedback between population density and individual fitness. At high population densities, animals run into double trouble: they might concurrently suffer from overexploitation of resources and also from negative interference among individuals regardless of resource availability, referred to as crowding. Animals are able to adapt to resource shortag...
The acoustic realization of boundary tones in whispered speech was investigated. This was done in four different vowels, and in two structures: with or without lexical stress and boundary tone coinciding. The analyses showed a number of cues, both secondary and compensatory ones, that were not fully comparable across vowel contexts, and more clearly present without tonal crowding.
Present study investigated the effect of red wine polyphenolic compounds (Provinols) on blood pressure (BP), nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity and vascular function in Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats exposed to chronic social stress produced by crowding. Adult male rats were divided into four groups: control (480 cm(2)/rat), Provinols-treated (20 mg/kg/day, 480 cm(2)/rat), crowded (200 cm(2)/rat) an...
