A 54-year-old woman with multiple sclerosis, on natalizumab, reported 2 weeks of left eye redness and blurry vision, previously diagnosed as conjunctivitis. Visual acuity was 20/125. Funduscopy revealed progressive outer retinal necrosis (figure 1), a viral retinitis of immunocompromised patients that frequently causes vision loss. Sequential bilateral involvement is common. Etiologies include ...
To study its safety and efficacy in treating cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, an AIDS patient received an intravitreal injection of liposome encapsulated ganciclovir in the right eye. The left eye served as a control, receiving intravitreal free ganciclovir. The right eye showed no retinal haemorrhages or detachment; however, vision declined initially, stabilising later. Weekly examination show...
RATIONALE Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis is a common opportunistic infection in immunocompromised patients, which may lead to blindness. CMV retinitis is not an uncommon infectious disease in patients with immune regulatory abnormalities, for example, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients. However, CMV retinitis in a patient with acute lymphosarcoma leukemia (ALL) undergoing allogeneic h...
The eyes of 39 patients who had received allogenic renal transplants were examined for signs of disease. Nine (23%) had early posterior subcapsular cataracts, two (5%) developed acute cytomegalovirus retinitis, and one developed steroid-induced glaucoma. The lesions which were found were all attributable to the immunosuppressive drug therapy. Thirty-five (87%) had detectable complement-fixing a...
Brentuximab vedotin is an antibody-conjugated chemotherapy targeting CD30 indicated in treatment of several lymphomas. We report the first 3 cases of cytomegalovirus severe infections with retinitis following this treatment. Evolution was favorable, but relapse occurred after treatment rechallenge. We suggest vigilance about cytomegalovirus in patients treated with brentuximab vedotin.
