Campylobacter strains can produce a heat-labile cytotonic toxin (CTON) and various cytotoxins (CTOX). Of 22 South African Campylobacter strains tested, 86% were toxigenic (77% produced CTON, 41% produced CTOX, and 32% produced both types) and 14% were toxin negative. Campylobacter jejuni strains were 67% CTON positive and 47% CTOX positive, whereas Campylobacter coli strains were 100 and 29% po...

The goal of selective targeting of enediyne cytotoxins has been investigated using estrogenic delivery vehicles. A series of estrogen-enediyne conjugates were assembled, and affinity for human estrogen receptor [hERalpha] was determined. The most promising candidate induced receptor degradation following Bergman cycloaromatization and caused inhibition of estrogen-induced transcription in T47-D...

We report the development of molecularly imprinted polyacrylamide nanoparticles that bind to and neutralize the activity of cytotoxins present in the venom of the Mozambique Spitting Cobra (Naja mossambica mossambica). The binding activity of these nanoparticles is avid and specific. These findings hold promise for the development of a synthetic antivenom.

Shiga toxin, Shiga-like toxin I (SLT-I) and Shiga-like toxin II (SLT-II) are cell-associated cytotoxins that kill both Vero cells and HeLa cells, whereas Shiga-like toxin II variant (SLT-IIv) is an extracellular cytotoxin that is more cytotoxic for Vero cells than for HeLa cells. The basis for these differences in cytotoxin localization and host cell specificity were examined in this study. The...

Hypoxia is an important characteristic of many solid tumors and has a major negative effect on treatment response. A way to combat this effect is with drugs called "bioreductive prodrugs" or "hypoxic cytotoxins," which are metabolized under hypoxia to toxic species. However, the patients with hypoxic tumors need to be identified.
