I summarize three recent calculations of electromagnetic reactions on deuterium in chiral perturbation theory. All of these calculations were carried out to O(Q4), i.e. next-to-next-to-leading order. The reactions discussed here are: elastic electron-deuteron scattering, Compton scattering on deuterium, and the photoproduction of neutral pions from deuterium at threshold.
Abstract Understanding energetic particle transport due to magnetohydrodynamic instabilities excited by particles is essential apprehend alpha confinement in a fusion burning plasma. In the large helical device (LHD), beam ion and deuterium–deuterium fusion-born triton resistive interchange mode destabilized helically-trapped ions (EIC) are studied employing comprehensive neutron diagnostics, s...
Abstract Atomistic simulations with machine-learned potential energy functions are employed for understanding the mechanisms driving sputtering of beryllium by low-energy deuterium and tritium atoms details their retention on pristine surfaces. The interaction between hydrogen/deuterium/tritium surfaces regarding erosion yields is investigated molecular dynamics simulations. both hydrogen isoto...
Deuterium flux through the thin wall of a palladium tube has been studied by monitoring gas pressure and temperature. A high-precision calorimeter (Calvet) was used to detect heat flow when the heater was shut down and the palladium tube was cooling down slowly. At certain temperatures an abnormal deuterium flux appeared. This deuterium flux reached a peak when the temperature of the palladium ...
Hydrogen composition and occupation state provide basic information for understanding various properties of the metal-hydrogen system, ranging from microscopic properties such as hydrogen diffusion to macroscopic properties such as phase stability. Here the deuterization process of face-centred cubic Fe to form solid-solution face-centred cubic FeDx is investigated using in situ neutron diffrac...
Flowing metal plasma facing components (PFCs) have the ability to withstand the extreme conditions of future tokamaks. The FLIRE facility at the University of Illinois measures the retention properties, both for helium (ash pumping) and hydrogen (recycling regime, tritium inventory), of candidate liquid PFCs, such as lithium. Results of hydrogen absorption measurements in flowing liquid lithium...
Magnetizing the fuel in inertial confinement fusion relaxes ignition requirements by reducing thermal conductivity and changing the physics of burn product confinement. Diagnosing the level of fuel magnetization during burn is critical to understanding target performance in magneto-inertial fusion (MIF) implosions. In pure deuterium fusion plasma, 1.01 MeV tritons are emitted during deuterium-d...
In inertial confinement fusion, deuterium–tritium (DT) fuel is brought to densities and temperatures where fusion ignition occurs. However, mixing of the ablator material into may prevent by diluting cooling fuel. MARBLE experiments at National Ignition Facility provide new insight how affects thermonuclear burn. These use laser-driven capsules containing deuterated plastic foam tritium gas. Em...
