Oxidative stress is probably a pathophysiological process leading to disadvantageous outcomes in diabetic pregnancies. We aimed to map a complex of potential markers of oxidative stress in this condition. Diabetic mothers had significantly higher concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in the plasma [TBARS] both before (p<0.0001) and after (p<0.001) delivery and also their new...

bolic disturbances during the pregnancy, and may therefore be termed "macrosomic." Acker et al' reported that the incidence of shoulder dystocia in the deliveries of diabetic mothers was 50%, 23%, and 9% for infants weighing :4500 g, 4000-4499 g, and 3500-3999 g, respectively, compared with 23%, 10%, and 2% for deliveries of non-diabetic mothers. Thus many more infants of diabetic mothers are t...

A prospective study was performed comparing bilirubin concentrations in 10 breast fed term infants of diabetic mothers (IDM) to those of 10 breast fed normal term infants. The ,-glucuronidase concentrations in serum and breast milk were assayed in the respective mothers. Significantly higher bilirubin concentrations were noted in the IDM group. Serum and breast milk P-glucuronidase concentratio...

Thirty one term large for gestational age (LGA) infants of non-diabetic mothers were compared with 30 appropriate for gestational age controls. Median absolute nucleated red blood cell counts, lymphocyte counts, and packed cell volumes were significantly higher in the LGA infants than the controls. It is possible that LGA babies of non-diabetic mothers are exposed to relative intrauterine hypoxia.

Type 1 diabetic mothers' infants show a delay of visual evoked potential (VEP) significantly related to some parameters of poor metabolic control during pregnancy. In the present paper we analyzed the characteristics of VEPs and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) recorded in 16 three-year-old type 1 diabetic mothers' children (DMC). Compared with controls (23 nondiabetic mothers' healthy ma...

OBJECTIVES Shoulder dystocia remains an obstetric emergency. Maternal diabetes is considered to be one of the major risk factors for shoulder dystocia. The aim of this study was to analyze antepartum and peripartum risk factors and complications of shoulder dystocia in diabetic and non-diabetic women. DESIGN We performed a retrospective analysis of 48 shoulder dystocia cases out of 28,485 vag...

Offspring of diabetic mothers are at risk of cardiovascular diseases in adulthood. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not clear. We hypothesize that prenatal exposure to maternal diabetes up-regulates myocardial NOX2 expression and enhances ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in the adult offspring. Maternal diabetes was induced in C57BL/6 mice by streptozotocin. Glucose-tolerant a...
