PURPOSE To measure levels of high-mobility group box -1 (HMGB1) and soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) in the vitreous fluid from patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and to correlate their levels with clinical disease activity and the levels of the inflammatory biomarkers monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), soluble intercellular adhesion mole...
Müller cells, the principal glia of the retina, generate tractional forces in response to IGF-I and platelet-derived growth factor and are present in diabetic fibro-vascular scar tissues causing traction retinal detachment. While diabetes-associated increases in vitreous IGFs have been reported, paradoxically high concentrations of these same growth factors in normal vitreous suggest the presen...
PURPOSE To report the short-term efficacy and safety of the transfer of an Ahmed(™) glaucoma valve (AGV™) tube from the vitreous into the anterior chamber, in a patient with neovascular glaucoma who had undergone pars plana AGV(™) implantation and ultimately needed a silicone oil tamponade. CASE A 41-year-old male with proliferative diabetic retinopathy in both eyes was referred to us for tre...
PURPOSE To evaluate the outcomes and complications of patients with diabetic tractional retinal detachment (TRD) treated with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV). PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively studied a case series of 24 eyes of 21 patients at a single tertiary, university-affiliated medical center. A review was carried out on patients who underwent PPV for the management of TRD due to prol...
OBJECTIVE To determine whether patients with acute posterior vitreous detachment with pigmented vitreous granules or hemorrhage have a higher likelihood of retinal tear compared with those with qualitatively normal vitreous examination findings. METHODS A multicenter cross-sectional study was performed in 3 peripheral ophthalmic clinics. Patients with acute posterior vitreous detachment were ...
Vitreous hemorrhages are important clinical manifestations of proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Non-cleared vitreous hemorrhages could lead to hemosiderosis bulbi and glaucoma. Here, we describe the case of a type 2 diabetic patient presenting anterior segment and vitreous hemorrhages that resolved three days after treatment with a single intravitreal injection of dobesilate.
B-scan ultrasound of the posterior segment is reported in 154 patients with severe diabetic eye disease. Epiretinal fibrosis, vitreous haemorrhage, vitreous detachment, and retinal detachment were frequently diagnosed. The ultrasonic findings are discussed in relation to the pathological changes in the vitreous in proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
To understand the role of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase-1 and -2 (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2) in intraocular diseases, levels of TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 were measured by enzyme immunoassay in 47 patients with various ocular diseases: in subretinal fluid of 7 patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and in vitreous of 12 patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy, 4 with proliferative vit...
purpose: to evaluate the significance of the presence of pigment granules in the anterior vitreous as a reliable indicator of retinal breaks in patients with acute symptomatic posterior vitreous detachment (pvd) . methods: this cross sectional study included 209 phakic patients with acute symptomatic pvd. the patients underwent anterior vitreous examination and fundoscopy. patients with dia...
