Discontinuous Galerkin time discretizations are combined with the mixed finite element and continuous finite element methods to solve the miscible displacement problem. Stable schemes of arbitrary order in space and time are obtained. Under minimal regularity assumptions on the data, convergence of the scheme is proved by using compactness results for functions that may be discontinuous in time.

A simple procedure to formulate efficient and stable hybrid/mixed finite elements is developed, for applications in macroas well as micromechanics. In this method, the strain and displacement field are independently assumed. Instead of using two-field variational principles to enforce both equilibrium and compatibility conditions in a variational sense, the independently assumed element strains...

the aim of this work is to investigate the variational discretization and mixed finite element methods for optimal control problem governed by semi linear parabolic equations with integral constraint. the state and co-state are approximated by the lowest order raviart-thomas mixed finite element spaces and the control is not discreted. optimal error estimates in l2 are established for the state...

The Dirichlet problem for the equations of plane elasticity is approximated by a mixed finite element method using a new family of composite finite elements having properties analogous to those possessed by the Raviart-Thomas mixed finite elements for a scalar, second-order elliptic equation. Estimates of optimal order and minimal regularity are derived for the errors in the displacement vector...

This paper presents a simple method based on strain energy density criterion to study the crack initiation angle by finite element method under biaxial loading condition. The crack surface relative displacement method is used to eliminate the calculation of the stress intensity factors which are normally required. The analysis is performed using higher order four node quadrilateral element. The...

abstract- mechanical damage degrades fruit quality in the chain from production to the consumption. damage is due to static, impact and vibration loads during processes such as harvesting, transportation, sorting and bulk storage. in the present study finite element (fe) models were used to simulate the process of static bruising for apple fruits by contact of the fruit with a hard surface. thr...

Abstract-The extensions of Reissner’s two-field (stress and displacement) principle to the cases wherein the displacement field is discontinuous and/or the stress field results in unreciprocated tractions, at a finite number of surfaces (“interelement boundaries”) in a domain (as, for instance, when the domain is discretized into finite elements), is considered. The conditions for the existence...

In this paper we analyze the finite element discretization for the first-order system least squares mixed model for the second-order elliptic problem by means of using nonconforming and conforming elements to approximate displacement and stress, respectively. Moreover, on arbitrary regular quadrilaterals, we propose new variants of both the rotated Q1 nonconforming element and the lowest-order ...
