The performance of coherent acoustic communication systems involving moving platforms (e.g., underwater vehicles and ships) is adversely effected by Doppler shift resulting from relative motion of the transmitter and receiver. This paper presents a series of innovations which, together, dramatically improve the response to Doppler shift of a widely-used adaptive receiver algorithm. The innovati...

Optical Doppler tomography (ODT) is an imaging technique which uses the Doppler shift observed in the spectrum of the backscattered light to form images of blood flow in a sample tissue. As data acquisition rates for ODT systems become greater, the need arises for a fast algorithm able to deal with increasingly short time records of the backscattered light. The objective of this paper is to pre...

In spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), any transverse motion component of a detected obliquely moving sample results in a nonlinear relationship between the Doppler phase shift and the axial sample velocity restricting phase-resolved Doppler OCT (PR-DOCT). The size of the deviation from the linear relation depends on the amount of the transverse velocity component, given by t...

The notion of the rotational frequency shift, an analog of the Doppler shift, is introduced. This new frequency shift occurs for atomic systems that lack rotational invariance, but have stationary states in a rotating frame. The rotational frequency shift is given by the scalar product of the angular velocity and the angular momentum of the emitted photon in full analogy with the standard Doppl...

This work introduces a new approach for modeling sea surface current from microwave satellite RADARSAT-1 SAR images. The Doppler shift frequency model was modified by using robust model. The modified Doppler shift frequency model was experienced on the RADARSAT-1 SAR data of two different modes (Wide-3 and Standard 2). The results of the study were validated using real time ocean current measur...

The linear Doppler shift is familiar as the rise and fall in pitch of a siren as it passes by. Less well known is the rotational Doppler shift, proportional to the rotation rate between source and receiver, multiplied by the angular momentum carried by the beam. In extreme cases the Doppler shift can be larger than the rest-frame frequency and for a red shift, the observed frequency then become...

An experiment is described showing that a 33-GHz microwave signal received by rotating antennas is not exhibiting the frequency shift (“transverse Doppler effect”) predicted by the relativistic Doppler formula. The sensitivity of the apparatus used has been tested to be sufficient for detecting frequency shifts as small as 10 3 Hz which corresponds to the value of (v c) = 5 10 14 used in the tr...

Doppler backscattering systems (DBSs) have been widely used in magnetic confinement fusion devices to measure the density fluctuations and propagation velocity of turbulence. However, the received signals of a DBS usually include both zero-order reflection and backscattering components, which results in interference in calculating the Doppler shift frequency from the backscattering components. ...

Recently Gizon, Duvall, and Schou (2002) suggested that supergranulation has a wave-like component. In this paper I show that the same phenomenon can be observed using surface Doppler shift data, thereby confirming their observations. I am also able to measure the dispersion relation to lower wavenumbers and to extend the results for rotation and meridional flows beyond ±70 • latitude.

When a light beam with a transverse spatially varying phase is considered for optical remote sensing, in addition to the usual longitudinal Doppler frequency shift of the returned signal induced by the motion of the scatter along the beam axis, a new transversal Doppler shift appears associated to the motion of the scatterer in the plane perpendicular to the beam axis. We discuss here how this ...
