Mental distractions and physical impairments can increase the risk of accidents by affecting a driver's ability to control the vehicle. In this article, we developed a linear mathematical model that can be used to quantitatively predict drivers' performance over a variety of possible driving conditions. Predictions were not limited only to conditions tested, but also included linear combination...
Abstract Date Presented 03/31/2022 Research demonstrates that decline in visual processing speed is a critical risk factor for drivers with medical conditions. Using scanning technology, this research examined the reaction times between medically at-risk adult and healthy controls. In addition to significant differences two groups, results among three common types of diagnoses suggest Vision Co...
When modeling the acceleration and deceleration of drivers, there are three characteristic time constants that influence the dynamics and stability of traffic flow: The reaction time of the drivers, the velocity adaptation time needed to accelerate to a new desired velocity, and the numerical update time. By means of numerical simulations with a time-continuous car-following model, we investiga...
Objective: We investigated the impacts of drivers’ socio-demographic factors on these lane-changing models, and developed Fuzzy logic-based lane-changing models associated the drivers’ demographic factors. Methods: Forty drivers were recruited for a driving simulator test to collect their driving behaviors of changing lane in a work zone with/without the aid of Driver’s Smart Advisory System (D...
In this paper we continue the bifurcation analysis on follow-the-leader traffic models started in [6]. Two new aspects are included in the model: variable reaction time and aggressiveness of the drivers. Variable reaction time changes especially the periodic dynamics in the model. We show that more aggressiveness has a stabilizing effect on the traffic flow.
A driver's response to a front-coming vehicle collision consists of braking reaction time and braking behavior. The purpose was to investigate drivers' responses at different speeds, relative distances, and particularly the behavior on the accelerator at the collision moment. Twelve young men participated in driving simulator tests. Vehicle parameters and electromyograms (EMGs) of the drivers' ...
