BACKGROUND/AIMS The combined electric acoustic stimulation (EAS) of one ear is a topic that has received considerable attention over the last 10 years, the technique having originally been introduced by Prof. Christoph A. von Ilberg for so-called borderline adult cochlear implant (CI) candidates. Its development has followed several parallel strands, including the modification of existing surgi...

The present study used concurrent-vowel recognition to measure integration efficiency of combined acoustic and electric stimulation in eight actual cochlear-implant subjects who had normal or residual low-frequency acoustic hearing contralaterally. Although these subjects could recognize single vowels (>90% correct) with either electric or combined stimulation, their performance degraded signif...

Two simple mathematical models of electric neuro-stimulation are derived and discussed. It is found that the common injected-charge model is less realistic than a model, in which a latency period, which follows after a short electric pulse, plays a role as important as the electric pulse. A stimulation signal is proposed that takes advantage of these findings and calls for experimental testing.

BACKGROUND Neuromuscular electric stimulation is widely used for muscle strengthening in clinical practice and for preventative purposes. However, there are few reports on the effects of electric stimulation on the immune response of the organism, and even those mainly describe the changes observed immediately after the electrotherapeutic procedures. The objective of our study was to examine th...

PURPOSE Electric field stimulation can interact with brain activity in a subthreshold manner. Electric fields have been previously adaptively applied to control seizures in vitro. We report the first results from establishing suitable electrode geometries and trajectories, as well as stimulation and recording electronics, to apply this technology in vivo. METHODS Electric field stimulation wa...

The present work was designed to study the influence of the stresses upon the inner ear. Guinea pigs were put in the state of stress by using electric stimulation (80V, 0.7sec., at 10sec. intervals) and light stimulation (electronic flash or electric bulb), and the influence of these stimulations upon the inner ear was observed. A) The susceptibility to acoustic trauma in animals was excited by...

In animals, electric field stimulation of carotid baroreceptors elicits a depressor response through sympathetic inhibition. We tested the hypothesis that the stimulation acutely reduces sympathetic vasomotor tone and blood pressure in patients with drug treatment-resistant arterial hypertension. Furthermore, we tested whether the stimulation impairs the physiological baroreflex regulation. We ...

Electric stimulation is known to initiate signaling pathways and provides a technique to enhance osteogenic differentiation of stem and/or progenitor cells. There are a variety of in vitro stimulation devices to apply electric fields to such cells. Herein, we describe and highlight the use of interdigitated electrodes to characterize signaling pathways and the effect of electric fields on the p...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the suppressive effect of electric cortical stimulation upon the seizure onset zone and the non-epileptic cortex covered by subdural electrodes in patients with neocortical epilepsy and mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). METHODS Four patients with medically intractable focal epilepsy had implanted subdural electrodes for preoperative evaluation. Cortical functional ma...
