The main aim of this study was to understand the relationship between the drug-resistant characteristics of Klebsiella pneumoniae and CTX-M-type extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs), and to detect the distributions of CTX-M-type ESBLs in clinically isolated strains. CTX-M ESBL genes isolated from the clinical samples were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and identified by sequence analy...

Over a 4-month period from November 2002 to February 2003, 27 ceftazidime-resistant or cefotaxime-resistant nonrepetitive Enterobacter cloacae isolates were collected from 27 patients hospitalized at HuaShan Hospital, Shanghai, People's Republic of China. The Etest did not detect extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in those 27 isolates; however, screening by the NCCLS ESBL disk test and c...

Background Extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) are enzymes produced by some gram negative bacilli that mediate resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins and aztreonam. ESBLs are commonly recognized in a variety of Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. This study focused on the prevalence of ESBL producing strains from diabetes patients and their antimicrobial correl...

Extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) confer resistance to clinically relevant antibiotics. Often, the resistance genes are carried by conjugative plasmids which are responsible for dissemination. Five IncI1 plasmids carrying ESBLs from commensal and clinical Escherichia coli isolates were completely sequenced and annotated along with a non-ESBL carrying IncI1 plasmid.

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) efficiently hydrolyze extended-spectrum beta-lactams such as cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, and aztreonam. ESBLs are most often plasmid-mediated. In Taiwan, the prevalence of ESBLs in bacteria has risen, ranging from 8.5 to 29.8% in Klebsiella pneumoniae and 1.5 to 16.7% in Escherichia coli isolates. The most prevalent types of ESBLs are SHV-5, S...

Aim: The present study was conducted to record the association of extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) producing enteric bacteria with diarrhea of poultry birds in Mizoram, India. Materials and Methods: Fecal samples were collected from poultry birds with the history of diarrhea from different parts of Mizoram. Samples were processed for isolation and identification of Escherichia coli, Salmo...

With the occurrence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in Pseudomonas aeruginosa being increasingly reported worldwide, there is a need for a reliable test to detect ESBLs in clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa. In our study, a total of 75 clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa were studied. Nitrocefin tests were performed to detect the beta-lactamase enzyme; isoelectric focusing electroph...

Since 1992 there have been seven major outbreaks of cholera in Argentina. Susceptibility analysis of 1,947 isolates (40% of reported cases) of Vibrio cholerae O1 biotype El Tor suggested the presence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in 28 isolates. Because of their different susceptibility profiles, V. cholerae isolates M1502, M1516, M1573, and M3030 (all of which are of the Ogawa s...

Three hundred sixty Enterobacteriaceae and nonfermenting gram-negative bacilli, isolated during one week in May 2004 at five hospitals in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, were evaluated for the presence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs). A prevalence of 7.8% was found, in contrast to the 1% observed in 1997. CTX-M ESBLs dominated, and four types were identified in 18 isolates.

INTRODUCTION Frequency of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and its variants may vary in different geographical areas, as reports indicate their spread in some certain communities. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of ESBLs in strains of Klebsiella and E. coli, isolated from patients hospitalized in teaching hospitals of Yazd. METHODS This cross-sectional study was ...
