While worldwide pandemic influenza A(H1N1) pdm case fatality rate (CFR) was 0.4%, Argentina's was 4.5%. A total of 34 strains from mild and severe cases were analyzed. A full genome sequencing was carried out on 26 of these, and a partial sequencing on the remaining eight. We observed no evidence that the high CFR can be attributed to direct virus changes. No evidence of re-assortment, mutation...
OBJECTIVE To understand the critical factors that are likely to influence road traffic fatality rates in large cities around the world in the next few decades. MATERIAL AND METHODS Road traffic fatality data for 56 cities around the world and for cities with a population of greater than 100,000 in the USA were collected and analysed to understand factors affecting differences in fatality rate...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Seven-day, 30-day, and 1-year case-fatality indicators have been used to compare stroke care among hospitals, provinces, and countries and to implement quality improvement strategies. However, limited information is available concerning variables associated with stroke case fatality at these different points in time. We sought to identify and compare variables associated ...
Geographical variations in stroke incidence and case-fatality have been documented worldwide. This study examines whether there are spatio-temporal variations in stroke incidence and case-fatality in Hong Kong and attempts to determine to what extent socioeconomic status (SES) and healthcare provision account for these variations. Residence-based hospital discharge data from the Hospital Author...
OBJECTIVE To compare rates of motor vehicle crash (MVC) fatalities among different race/ethnic groups in urban and rural Arizona. METHOD Using the Fatality Analysis Reporting System and the National Center for Health Statistics Multiple Cause of Death file, MVC fatalities in Arizona from 1990-96 inclusive were classified by gender, race/ethnicity, and urban or rural residence. Age adjusted ra...
To investigate nephropathia epidemica in Sweden during 1997-2007, we determined case-fatality rates for 5,282 patients with this disease. Overall, 0.4% died of acute nephropathia epidemica ≤3 months after diagnosis. Case-fatality rates increased with age. Only women showed an increased case-fatality rate during the first year after diagnosis.
BACKGROUND Previous studies found increased case fatality after myocardial infarction and more frequent sudden death in RA patients compared to non-RA subjects. The RA associated CV risk might be explained by the combined effects of chronic systemic inflammation and increased lifestyle associated cardiovascular risk factors, and modified by the use of medication such as non steroidal anti-infla...
