Gigahertz to terahertz radiation sources based on cold-cathode vacuum electron technology are pursued, because its unique characteristics of instant switch-on and power saving are important to military and space applications. Gigahertz gyrotron was reported using carbon nanotube (CNT) cold-cathode. It is reported here in first time that a fully-sealed CNT cold-cathode 0.22 THz-gyrotron is reali...

Carbon nanostructures have been much sought after for cold-cathode field emission applications. Herein a printing technique is reported to controllably nanostructure chemical vapor deposited graphene into vertically standing fins. The method allows for the creation of regular arrays of bilayer graphene fins, with sharp ridges that, when printed onto gold electrodes, afford a new type of field e...

We report microwave emission measurements from an inverted relativistic magnetron comprising an outer cylindrical field emission cathode and an inner coaxial anode with embedded vane resonators. The magnetron operates in the w mode at a frequency of %3.6GHz, and voltages of 1-2MV. The RF power is %500MW.

X-ray radiation is widely used in medical and industrial applications. The basic design of the x-ray tube has not changed significantly in the last century. In this paper, we demonstrate that medical diagnostic x-ray radiation can be generated using a carbon nanotube (CNT) based field-emission cathode. The device can readily produce both continuous and pulsed x-ray with a programmable waveform ...

An approximate analytic solution is constructed for the 2D space-charge-limited emission by a cathode surrounded by nonemitting conducting ledges of width Lambda. An essentially exact solution (via conformal mapping) of the electrostatic problem in vacuum is matched to the solution of a linearized problem in the space charge region whose boundaries are sharp due to the presence of a strong magn...

Here, we investigate, through parametrically optimized macroscale simulations, the field electron emission from arrays of carbon nanotube (CNT)-coated Spindts towards the development of an emerging class of novel vacuum electron devices. The present study builds on empirical data gleaned from our recent experimental findings on the room temperature electron emission from large area CNT electron...

In this Letter we report on the use of ultrashort infrared laser pulses to generate a copious amount of electrons by a copper cathode in an rf photoinjector. The charge yield verifies the generalized Fowler-Dubridge theory for multiphoton photoemission. The emission is verified to be prompt using a two pulse autocorrelation technique. The thermal emittance associated with the excess kinetic ene...

In this work, we report the synthesis and field emission properties of carbon nanotube multistage emitter arrays, which were grown on porous silicon by catalytic thermal chemical vapor deposition. The emitter structure consisted of arrays of multiwall nanotubes (MWNTs) on which single/thin-multiwall nanotubes were grown. The structure was confirmed by TEM and Raman analysis. Higher field emissi...
