The sonochemical synthesis of nanostructured materials owes its origins to the extreme conditions created during acoustic cavitation, i.e., the formation of localized hot spots in the core of collapsing bubbles in a liquid irradiated with high intensity ultrasound (US). In particular, in the present work a sonochemical synthesis has been investigated for the production of three different iron-b...
The Fischer–Tropsch (FT) synthesis is traditionally associated with fossil fuel consumption, but recently this technology has emerged as a keystone that enables the conversion of captured CO2 sustainable hydrogen to energy-dense fuels and chemicals for sectors which are challenging be electrified. Iron-based FT catalysts promoted alkali transition metals improve reducibility, activity, selectiv...
With an increase in energy consumption globally, Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis is a good alternative for producing fuels and chemicals from coal, natural gas or biomass. Among them, coal to liquids has been put into production countries that have large reserves. In this process, Fe-based catalysts are commonly used due their earth abundance, comparatively wide operation range ready availabilit...
Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis is one of the most complex catalyzed chemical reactions in which the chain-growth mechanism that leads to formation of long-chain hydrocarbons is not well understood yet. The present work provides deeper insight into the relation between the kinetics of the FT reaction on a silica-supported cobalt catalyst and the composition of the surface adsorbed layer. Cofeedi...
The addition of Ru to Mn and Zr-modified Co/SiO2 catalysts, while applying different preparation orders and loading amounts, was investigated as a means of enhancing the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reaction. The coimpregnation of Zr/SiO2 with Co, Mn and Ru gave the most attractive catalytic properties. This can be attributed to the higher dispersion of Co metal resulting from the coimpregnation o...
The unique catalytic activity of vanadium nitrogenase suggests a new direction for the direct production of biofuels from CO with either synthetic catalysts or nitrogenase-containing bacteria. The reduction of CO by V nitrogenase to light hydrocarbons shows striking similarities to the established Fischer-Tropsch process; however, the enzyme does not use H(2) directly for this reaction. ADP=ade...
The structure-activity relations in the alumina-supported cobalt catalysts are studied at the realistic conditions of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis using in situ time-resolved XRD and catalytic measurements. Cobalt sintering during the first 3-5 h of the reaction and cobalt carbidisation at a longer time on stream (>8 h) coincide with catalyst deactivation.
This project extends previously discovered Fe-based catalysts to hydrogen-poor synthesis gas streams derived from coal and biomass sources. These catalysts have shown unprecedented Fischer-Tropsch synthesis rates and selectivities for feedstocks consisting of synthesis gas derived from methane. During the first reporting period, we certified a microreactor, installed required analytical equipme...
Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is a part of Gas-to Liquids (GTL), Biomass-to-Liquids (BTL) and Coal to Liquids (CTL) technologies, which produce alternatives clean fuels from natural gas, biomass and coal. The catalytic performance of cobalt catalysts in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis strongly depends on the size of cobalt particles in nanoscale range (6-30 nm). Cobalt catalysts are usually prepared via ...
