Names, or object-level variables, are a ubiquitous feature in programming languages and other computational applications. Reasoning with names, and related constructs like binding and freshness, often poses conceptual and technical challenges. Nominal Equational Logic (NEL) is a logic for reasoning about equations in the presence of freshness side conditions. This paper gives a category theoret...
To follow the dynamicity of the user’s content, researchers have recently started to model interactions between users and the ContextAware Recommender Systems (CARS) as a bandit problem where the system needs to deal with exploration and exploitation dilemma. In this sense, we propose to study the freshness of the user’s content in CARS through the bandit problem. We introduce in this paper an ...
Data freshness has been identified as one of the most important data quality attributes in information systems. This importance increases particularly in the context of systems composed of a large set of autonomous data sources where integrating data having different freshness may lead to semantic problems. This paper addresses the problem of evaluating data freshness in a data integration syst...
In this paper we examine data dissemination in MANETs using various push and pull based protocols and a combination of both. We evaluate the protocols considering the load for each node and the resulting data freshness. Furthermore we introduce an adaptive pull protocol which enhances dissemination and saves up to 13% of the network load achieving the same freshness rate as other protocols.
We survey the variations on the choice and the usage of freshness identiiers, and the various forms of replay attack. Besides helping to clarify the important concepts of freshness and replay, this exercise demonstrates the potential complexity in devising formal methods to analyze cryptographic protocols.
Ad-hoc routing protocols in mobile environments face a fundamental tradeoff between delay and communication overhead. Since routes become stale as nodes move, nodes need to frequently recompute routes, leading to an increase in control traffic overhead. In dealing with this tradeoff, protocols often adopt a fixed stance: some protocols assume frequent node movement, regularly recompute routes a...
Many network services and protocols can work correctly only when freshness of messages sent between participants is assured and when the protocol parties’ internal clocks are adjusted. In this paper we present a novel, secure and fast procedure which can be used to ensure data freshness and clock synchronization between two communicating parties. Next, we show how this solution can be used in o...

Page revisiting is a popular browsing activity in the Web. In this paper we describe a method for improving page revisiting by detecting and highlighting the information on browsed Web pages that is fresh for a user. Content freshness is determined based on comparison with the previously viewed versions of pages. Any new content for the user is marked, enabling the user to quickly spot it. We a...
