Candida lipolytica was recovered from six patients in three different clinical centers. The index isolate caused a persistent fungemia with catheter-associated Candida thrombophlebitis, the second isolate was from a polymicrobial sinusitis, and the remaining four isolates were involved in tissue colonization. These and 20 other isolates were consistent in their morphological and physiological c...

We report a case of fungemia caused by Candida dubliniensis in a non-HIV infected patient. Multiple cultures of blood performed over a period of 13 days were positive for this recently described yeast species. The C. dubliniensis isolates recovered were susceptible to fluconazole in vitro and the patient responded to intravenous therapy with this antifungal agent. It was possible to differentia...

A panfungal PCR assay was used to evaluate the ability of the ESP blood culture system to detect fungemia. The results showed that the ESP system is reliable for the detection of fungi and showed the applicability of using a molecular-based assay as a potential rapid and reliable method for the identification of fungi.

Data on fungemia epidemiology and antifungal susceptibility of isolates from children are scarce, leading frequently to pediatric empirical treatment based on available adult data. The present study was designed to update the epidemiological, mycological, and in vitro susceptibility data on fungal isolates from children with fungemia in Spain. All fungemia episodes were identified prospectively...

Fungi have become increasingly important causes of nosocomial bloodstream infections. The major cause of nosocomial fungemia has been Candida spp, but increasingly molds and other yeasts have caused disease. Exophiala jeanselmei and members of the genus Rhinocladiella are dematiaceous moulds, which have been infrequently associated with systemic infection and have not been described as causes o...

BACKGROUND Mortality for candidemia ranges from 15% to 35%. Current guidelines recommend inoculating blood into three aerobic and three anaerobic blood culture bottles when candidemia is suspected, without mention of a fungal blood culture bottle. OBJECTIVE To determine the value of the BACTEC Myco/F Lytic blood culture media in the diagnosis of fungemia. METHODS A two-year retrospective cr...

We report a case of intravenous catheter-associated fungemia caused by Candida rugosa; this is the first report of such an infection in a human. Multiple cultures of blood taken over a 24-h period and of the intravenous catheter tip were positive for this unusual isolate. The patient was treated with intravenous amphotericin B and made an uneventful recovery. Intravenous cannulae and other intr...
