UNLABELLED The aim of the study was to assess (quantitatively) colonic hydrogen absorption. Hydrogen volumes in flatus and breath were measured over periods of six hours in normal subjects during fasting and after ingestion of the non-absorbable carbohydrate lactulose to simulate the effect of fermentable dietary fibres. If less than 76 ml/6 h of hydrogen accumulated in the colon then all of it...

We observe transformation of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance into an absorption resonance in a L interaction configuration in a cell filled with Rb and a buffer gas. This transformation occurs as one-photon detuning of the coupling fields is varied from the atomic transition. No such absorption resonance is found in the absence of a buffer gas. The width of the abso...

This paper present a research work on the modeling of a gas absorption packed column with the aim formulating a mathematical model and simulation of the model using a computer software to obtain the rate of absorption and the amount of absorbed carbon dioxide CO2 into dilute sodium hydroxide NaOH. Arm field gas absorption column titration techniques were used for the analysis. The total concent...

T he performance of a new type of gas absorber was investigated. Laboratory absorption experiments on different absorption systems such as ethyl–thiol, acetone–water, ethanol–water, methylene chloride–festo oil and H2S–NaOH were carried out under reduced air pressure. The absorption rate was investigated as a function of geometrical parameters and construction materials. The possibility of inst...

Diode-laser-based absorption spectroscopy for the evaluation of embedded gas concentrations in porous materials is demonstrated in measurements of molecular oxygen dispersed throughout scattering polystyrene foam, used here as a generic test material. The mean path length of light scattered in the material is determined with the temporal characteristics of the radiation transmitted through the ...

In this letter, we present a nanophotonic device consisting of plasmonic nanopatch array (NPA) with integrated metal-organic framework (MOF) for enhanced infrared absorption gas sensing. By designing a gold NPA on a sapphire substrate, we are able to achieve enhanced optical field that spatially overlaps with the MOF layer, which can adsorb carbon dioxide (CO2) with high capacity. Experimental ...

We report on HST/STIS spectra of the Lyα emission in the central dominant galaxies in three rich clusters of galaxies. We find evidence for a population of clouds in the intracluster medium. We detect 10 Lyα absorption systems towards the nucleus of NGC1275 with columns of N(HI) ∼ 10 to 10 cm. These columns would not have been detected in the 21 cm line, but are easily detected in the Lyα line....

Cool gas should be present in galaxy clusters due to stripping of galactic gas, infall onto the cluster, and from cooling flows. We searched for this gas through resonance absorption line observations from lowionization metal line gas toward six background quasars. Both cooling flow and non-cooling flow clusters were observed, with lines of sight from the inner to outer parts of the cluster (0....

We investigated the interactions between liquid, gas, and solid phases in the capillary filling process of closed-end nanochannels. This paper presents theoretical models without and with absorption and diffusion of gas molecules in the liquid. Capillary filling experiments were carried out in closed-end silicon nanochannels with different lengths. The theoretical and measured characteristics o...
