Co-polymers of lactide and glycolide, referred to as PLGA, have generated tremendous interest because of their excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability and mechanical strength. Various polymeric devices like microspheres, microcapsules, nanoparticles, pellets, implants, and films have been fabricated using these polymers. They can be transformed by spinning into filaments for subsequent fab...

Microsphere technology was used to develop formulations of rifampin for targeted delivery to host macrophages. These formulations were prepared by using biocompatible polymeric excipients of lactide and glycolide copolymers. Release characteristics were examined in vitro and also in two monocytic cell lines, the murine J774 and the human Mono Mac 6 cell lines. Bioassay assessment of cell cultur...

The unprecedented homogeneous hydrogenation of cyclic di-esters, in particular biomass-derived glycolide and lactide, to the corresponding 1,2-diols is catalyzed by Ru(II) PNN (1) and Ru(II) CNN (2) pincer complexes under mild hydrogen pressure and (in the case of 1) neutral conditions. No racemization was observed when a chiral di-ester was used.

Statins, a group of potent inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl Coenzyme A reductase in cholesterol biosynthesis pathway, have been widely used as a cholesterol lowering drug. The plieotrophic effect of statins on bone metabolism in long-term usage has been begun to be studied during recent years and several in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated the ability of statins to promote ex...

We demonstrate an approach to the surface-mediated release of a synthetic N-acylated L-homoserine lactone (AHL) modulator of bacterial quorum sensing (QS). AHL released gradually from thin films of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLG) is shown to activate QS in the model symbiont Vibrio fischeri at levels that exceed those promoted by direct solution-based administration.

Background Therapeutic management of Mycobacterium avium infection is inadequate due to patient non-compliance, lengthy treatment regimen, multidrug associated toxic side-effects etc. particularly in AIDS patients who are at a greater risk of developing mycobacterial infection. This study was designed to evaluate chemotherapeutic potential of poly D, L-lactide-co-glycolide nanoparticles against...

Recently, polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted enormous attention as targeted drug delivery vehicles.[1-4] Especially, biodegradable and biocompatible polymeric NPs comprised of poly(lactide-co-glycolide)-b-polyethyleneglycol (PLGA-PEG) block copolymers exhibit optimal physicochemical characteristics such as the ability to incorporate various targeting agents, enhanced immune evasion, c...
