In recent years the distribution of work in Britain has "hollowed out", with a growth in the proportions of both "work-rich" and" work-poor" households. The growth in twoand zero-earner couples evident in cross-sectional snapshots has different implications for the distribution of family income (in long and short terms) according to whether more people are experiencing episodes of a given lengt...
In this paper, we propose a novel holistic methodology for keyword search in historical typewritten documents combining synthetic data and user's feedback. The holistic approach treats the word as a single entity and entails the recognition of the whole word rather than of individual characters. Our aim is to search for keywords typed by the user in a large collection of digitized typewritten h...
In this paper, we investigate the use of Convolutional Neural Networks for counting the number of records in historical handwritten documents. With this work we demonstrate that training the networks only with synthetic images allows us to perform a near perfect evaluation of the number of records printed on historical documents. The experiments have been performed on a benchmark dataset compos...
The implementation of word spotting is not an easy procedure and it gets even worse in the case of historical documents since it requires character recognition and indexing of the document images. A general technique for word spotting is presented, independent of OCR, using automatic representation of the text queries of the user by word images and comparing them with the word images extracted ...
This paper introduces the idea of a non-kinship-based Universal-family firm, an organizational form we developed based on interpreting historical writings in their socio-economic context. We analyzed Luke’s gospel with an eye toward drawing implications for the stewardship-agency debate in the contemporary family business literature. Our paper makes contributions at two important levels. In add...
For quantitative determination of lignin, we have invasive (gravimetric determination i. e. ASTM, TAPPI, SCAN) and non-invasive methods on our disposal. Invasive methods are not suitable for historical documents. On the other hand, several spectroscopic techniques are in use, based on IR and UV spectroscopy. The absorption of light of λ > 300 310 nm by pure cellulose is minimal and most UVspect...
While a vibrant and growing research literature exists on the value of GIS to archaeology in general, application geospatial digital data subfield historical is less well developed, especially North America. This particularly true for era industrialization, where archaeological record accompanied by comparatively rich record. Historical industrial are fundamentally bound up interplay between ma...
Document images accompanied by OCR output text and ground truth transcriptions are useful for developing and evaluating document recognition and processing methods, especially for historical document images. Additionally, research into improving the performance of such methods often requires further annotation of training and test data (e.g., topical document labels). However, transcribing and ...
This paper presents a scheme for generating paper texture of historical documents. A new entropy based segmentation algorithm is used to decompose the image of documents into the image of the paper background and the printing of the document. Statistical analysis allows filling in the gaps from the printing, yielding a blank sheet of paper with similar texture to the original document.
