henols and phenolic substances are aromatic hydroxy compounds classified as monohydric (e.g., phenol, cresols [methylphenols], xylenols [dimethylphenols]), dihydric (e.g., catechols [odihydroxybenzenes], resorcinols [m-dihydroxybenzenes]) or polyhydric (with three or more hydroxy groups), depending on the number of hydroxyl groups attached to the aromatic benzene ring (McNeely et al. 1979). The...

In an attempt to understand the structural characteristics of phenolic compounds that favour the inhibition of 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) formation, this study analyzes the role of twenty-five phenolic compounds on the PhIP produced in phenylalanine/creatinine/oxidised lipid reaction mixtures. The results showed that phenols having two hydroxy groups at meta position...

The reduction of 1,3-diketones and β-hydroxyketones with NaBH(4) in aqueous acetonitrile is highly stereoselective in the presence of stoichiometric amounts of bovine or human albumin, giving anti 1,3-diols with d.e. up to 96%. The same reaction, without albumin, gives syn and anti 1,3-diols in approximately 1:1 ratio. The presence of an aromatic carbonyl group is essential for diastereoselecti...

Reactions of benzoylpyruvate with a mixture of aromatic aldehydes and 5-amino-1,3,4-thiadizole-2-thiol in a 1:1:1 molar ratio, afforded 5-(5-aryl-4-benzoyl-3-hydroxy-2-oxo-2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-1,3,4-thiadizole-2-thiols (3a-c). The structure of the resulted products was confirmed by determination of the melting point and spectrophotometric techniques such as IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy.

Chalcones are the condensation product of acetophenone in combination with aromatic aldehydes in the presence of strong base. Chalcones and their metal complexes having prominent role in modern coordination chemistry. These compounds possessing novel structural features, interesting spectral and magnetic properties, have been the subject of intensive research due to their importance in medical,...

Many aldehydes are important components of natural flavours. They are used in food, cosmetic, and biomedical industries in large amounts. Plant cells or microorganisms carry out their production by biotransformation, which is one of the biotechnological methods that allow them to be defined as 'natural'. Cell cultures of Silybum marianum and Peganum harmala have been studied with a view to in...

A new method has been developed to facilitate the use of fullerenes as stationary phases (SPs) in gas chromatography (GC). In this method, ionic liquids (ILs) are used as solvents to coat fullerenes (C(60), amino-C(60) and hydroxy-C(60)) onto GC columns. However, the ILs serve not just as coating solvents but also act synergistically with fullerenes to provide unique properties as stationary ph...

Treatment of aryl-fused bicyclo[4.2.0]octanols with an oxidant such as phenyliodine diacetate (PIDA) or hypochlorous acid gave dihydrofuran-containing polycyclic aromatic compounds by selective β-cleavage the cyclobutanol moiety. Mechanistic studies suggest that oxygen atom hydrofuran ring is incorporated from hydroxy group substrate via intramolecular addition. The oxidative transformation sho...
