BACKGROUND Increased hypercoagulability has been reported with low doses of direct thrombin inhibitors but not with direct factor Xa inhibitors. OBJECTIVES To compare the effects of rivaroxaban with those of melagatran and dabigatran on thrombin generation (TG) and tissue factor-induced hypercoagulability and to explore the possible involvement of the thrombin-thrombomodulin/activated protein...

Vasculitis is a rare cause of leg ulceration. It is unclear why severe skin infarction develops in some patients with vasculitis, whereas others have only mild symptoms such as purpura, erythema, or urticaria. A coincidence of vasculitis and hypercoagulability may lead to more extensive thrombotic occlusion and hence explain the occurrence of large ulcers in a subset of patients. Our aim was to...

Although many bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia, have been well characterized for many years, the knowledge of hypercoagulability syndromes is significantly less. This is the result of a long-held belief that hypercoagulability disorders were simply related to excessive amounts of the same coagulation factors that patients with bleeding disorders lacked. Now hypercoagulability disorders ar...

Hypercoagulability can result from a variety of inherited and, more commonly, acquired conditions. Testing for the underlying cause of thrombosis in a patient is complicated both by the number and variety of clinical conditions that can cause hypercoagulability as well as the many potential assay interferences. Using an algorithmic approach to hypercoagulability testing provides the ability to ...

Methods We performed transesophageal echocardiography in 255 patients with first acute ischemic stroke and in 209 control subjects matched by age, gender, and race/ethnicity. The association between arch plaques and hypercoagulability, and its effect on the stroke risk, was assessed with a case-control design. Stroke patients were then followed prospectively to assess recurrent stroke and death.
