The immune system protects us from foreign substances or pathogens by generating specific antibodies. The variety of immunoglobulin (Ig) paratopes for antigen recognition is a result of the V(D)J rearrangement mechanism, while a fast and efficient immune response is mediated by specific immunoglobulin isotypes obtained through class switch recombination (CSR). To get a better understanding on h...

OBJECTIVE To perform a clinical and immunological study of patients with rheumatoid arthritis who develop subnormal serum immunoglobulins on gold treatment; to clarify the nature of the defect in antibody production and determine the natural history of this adverse reaction; to use this information to suggest guidelines for the detection, investigation, and management of this complication. ME...

BACKGROUND Papular urticaria caused by flea bite presents clinical symptoms of a hypersensitivity reaction accompanied by skin lesions. However, the pattern of recognition by different antibody isotypes during the progression of the disease is unknown. This study evaluated variations in immunoglobulin E and immunoglobulin G subclass antibody responses to flea antigens during the progression of ...

In this study, the kinetics of specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) isotypes were characterized in Babesia equi (Theileria equi)-infected horses. IgGa and IgGb developed during acute infection, whereas IgG(T) was detected only after resolution of acute parasitemia. The same IgG isotype profile induced during acute infection was obtained by equi merozoite antigen 1/saponin immunization.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is identified by unique immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) variable diversity joining region gene rearrangements, termed clonotypic, and an M protein termed the "clinical" isotype. Transcripts encoding clonotypic pre and postswitch IgH isotypes were identified in MM peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), bone marrow (BM), and mobilized blood. For 29 patients, 38 BM, 17 ...

BACKGROUND: It is known that during normal pregnancy and after immunotherapy blocking antibodies are developed, these antibodies inhibit mixed lymphocyte reaction and are also anti-mitogenic in nature. Mixed lymphocyte reaction blocking antibodies are specific to the husband's lymphocytes. In the present study an attempt has been made to characterize the mixed lymphocyte reaction blocking antib...

Studies in man (1, 2), rabbit (3), and guinea pig (4) have shown that the 18S 71-macroglobu]ins (IgM) are catabolized much more rapidly than 7S 72-globulins (IgG). Thus, immunoglobulin classes may differ in their rates of turnover. Differences in the catabolic control of immunoglobulins are also discernable. The serum level of 7S 7-globulin (IgG) helps to determine the catabolic rate; the highe...

Previous studies have suggested that analysis of the distribution of surface immunoglobulin light chain isotypes by flow cytometry provides evidence for monoclonality of B cell tumors and may detect populations of circulating tumor cells in patients with lymphoproliferative disease. We have used simultaneous flow cytometry and DNA restriction enzyme analysis on 58 samples of tissue and blood to...
