We identify a subsample of the recently detected extrasolar planets that is minimally affected by the selection effects of the Doppler detection method. With a simple analysis we quantify trends in the surface density of this subsample in the period-Msin(i) plane. A modest extrapolation of these trends puts Jupiter in the most densely occupied region of this parameter space, thus indicating tha...

Models of terrestrial planet formation in the presence of a migrating giant planet have challenged the notion that hot-Jupiter systems lack terrestrial planets. We briefly review this issue and suggest that hot-Jupiter systems should be prime targets for future observational missions designed to detect Earth-sized and potentially habitable worlds.

The Jupiter Europa Orbiter (JEO) is NASA’s element of the joint Europa Jupiter System Mission (EJSM). Based on current trajectories, the spacecraft will spend a significant amount of time in the Jovian radiation belts. Therefore, research endeavors are underway to study the radiation effects on the various parts and components needed to implement the instruments. Data from these studies will be...

The replicated list object has been frequently used to model the core functionality (e.g., insertion, deletion, and read) of replicated collaborative text editing systems. In this paper we revisit the specification and implementation of a replicated list object, specifically the weak list specification proposed recently by Attiya et al. and the Jupiter protocol designed in the 1990s. We prove t...

Astronomical observations of planets orbiting stars other than our sun will inevitably lead to a more precise understanding of our own solar system and as well, perhaps, of the universe as a whole. The discovery of the so-called 'hot Jupiter' exo-planets, those with anomalously inflated size and low density relative to Jupiter, has evoked much discussion as to possible sources of internal heat ...

Jupiter, owing to its large mass and rapid formation, played a crucial role in shaping the solar system as we know it today. Jupiter mostly contains hydrogen and helium (more than 87% by mass), and as such bears a close resemblance to the Sun. However, the Sun has only 2% of its mass in elements other than hydrogen and helium (the heavy elements), whereas Jupiter has between 3 and 13%. The exac...

I report a novel theory that nonuniform viscous frictional force in the solar nebula accounts for the largest mass of Jupiter and Saturn and their largest amount of H and He among the planets, two outstanding facts that are unsolved puzzles in our understanding of origin of the Solar System. It is shown that the nebula model of uniform viscosity does not match the present planet masses. By stud...

Introduct ion: Since the major chondritic components—chondrules, Ca-Al–rich inclusions (CAIs), and amoeboid-olivine inclusions—formed in the nebula, their ages provide a limit for the lifetime of the solar nebula. If chondritic components accreted into asteroids before Jupiter formed, then these ages also provide constraints on the time of Jupiter’s formation. Such constraints might identify wh...
