Lexical unit is a word or collocation. Extracting lexical knowledge is an essential and difficult task in NLP. The methods of extracting of lexical units are discussed. We present a method for the identification of lexical boundaries. The problem of necessity of large corpora for training is discussed. The advantage of identification of lexical boundaries within a text over traditional window m...

In this paper, we show that accessibility of syntactic information eases collocation extraction from corpora, and supports identi cation of lexical and structural restrictions related to collocations. For collocation identi cation we use a corpus that is automatically annotated applying a part-of-speech tagger and a phrase chunker.

This paper introduces an algorithm for automatically acquiring the conceptual structure of each word from corpus. The concept of a word is defined within the probabilistic framework. A variation of Belief Net named as Collocation Map is used to compute the probabilities. The Belief Net captures the conditional independences of words, which is obtained from the cooccurrence relations. The comput...

Abstract The present study explores the impact of corpus-based collocation instruction on intermediate Iranian EFL learners' writing ability. For this study, 84 Iranian learners, studying English as a foreign language in Bayan Institute, Iran, were selected and were randomly divided into two groups, experimental and control. Conventional methods of writing instruction were taught to the control...

This paper presents a supervised method for resolving metonymies. We enhance a commonly used feature set with features extracted based on collocation information from corpora, generalized using lexical and encyclopedic knowledge to determine the preferred sense of the potentially metonymic word using methods from unsupervised word sense disambiguation. The methodology developed addresses one is...

We introduce a new, linguistically grounded measure of collocativity based on the property of limited modifiability and test it on German PP-verb combinations. We show that our measure not only significantly outperforms the standard lexical association measures typically employed for collocation extraction, but also yields a valuable by-product for the creation of collocation databases, viz. po...

To search a large dictionary for a collocation expressing a desired meaning, the human reader needs some kind of hierarchical structure that would facilitate such search. In this paper, fragments of semantic classification of modifiers are elaborated based on several highly modifier-productive nouns, namely, common nouns person, action, look, corporation, and price, as well the terms coating, m...

Collocations constitute an important type of syntagmatic information whose introduction into WordNets has not yet been addressed. The goal of our work is the integration of the collocational material for the field of emotion nouns encoded in the DIccionario de colocaciones del español (DICE) in terms of Lexical Functions into the Spanish part of the EuroWordNet (SpEWN). Two features of collocat...
