The pathogenesis of residual thymic cysts after treatment for mediastinal Hodgkin's disease is uncertain. Their presence after adequate treatment often presents the oncologist and the thoracic surgeon with a therapeutic dilemma. Two patients with residual thymic cysts after curative treatment for mediastinal Hodgkin's disease are described and the management discussed.
Ultrasound examination of the thorax is an extremely valuable adjunct imaging modality in chest wall, pleural, mediastinal, and pulmonary disease. While air-filled lungs will obscure some deeper pulmonary lesions, ultrasound can evaluate peripheral pulmonary disease, mediastinal masses, and the extent and character of pleural effusions. Ultrasound guidance of needle biopsies and thoracocentesis...
The role of GI endosonographers has undergone a major shift in the development of accurate and safe methods for mediastinal lymph node staging in patients with cancer of the lung. Although GI endosonographers are traditionally outside the field of pulmonary disease, the ease, safety, clinical impact on management, and large volume of cases (greater than esophagus, stomach, pancreas, bile duct, ...
Optimal management of nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) depends on tissue diagnosis and accurate staging. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is minimally invasive and provides cytological confirmation of malignant mediastinal disease. The aim was to assess the accuracy of EUS-FNA in cases of enlarged mediastinal lymphadenopathy (LN) of unknown aetiology and in the sta...
abstract castleman disease or giant node hyperplasia is a rare disorder of the lymphoid tissue most often involving the mediastinal lymph nodes. we report a case of localized retroperitoneal hyaline-vascular type of castleman disease. a 35-year old woman presented with mild epigastric pain with radiation to the back. amild anemia was the only abnormal associated finding. abdominal ultrasound an...
Mediastinal emphysema is a status of gas retention in mediastinum, usually caused by airway system injury or esophagus rupture. Healthy people without trauma and basic disease emerging unexplained mediastinal emphysema are called idiopathic mediastinal emphysema. While tension pneumomediastinum is an exceptional and potentially lethal condition, the increased intramediastinal pressure with a se...
CT is an important modality for imaging mediastinal masses, and certain CT attenuation features (fat, calcium, or water attenuation, contrast enhancement) are well known to suggest specific diagnoses. In a series of 132 consecutive patients with tissue-proven mediastinal masses, these specific CT features were present in only 16. We evaluated the ability of CT to differentiate soft tissue media...
