In this article, I will provide an introduction to the eld of experimental meson spectroscopy. I will start with a brief overview of how we classify mesons, and determine which mesons are which. I will then give a summary of how we extract mesons properties from data, and nally overview what the current issues are in the eld.
The status of non-perturbative QCD calculations for mesons with gluonic excitation is presented. Lattice results for the glueball spectrum are reviewed. For hybrid mesons, the heavy quark results are summarised and new results are presented for light quarks. We study the flavour singlet mesons from first principles using lattice QCD. We explore the splitting between flavour singlet and non-singlet for vector and axial mesons as well as the more commonly studied cases of the scalar and pseudoscalar mesons.
We estimate the rates for radiative transitions of the lightest scalar mesons f0(980) and a0(980) to the vector mesons ρ and ω. We argue that measurements of the radiative decays of those scalar mesons can provide important new information on their structure.
Dilepton production from hot hadronic matter is studied in an effective chiral Lagrangian with pions, ρ-mesons, and a 1 mesons, We find that the production rates from reactions that involve axial-vector mesons dominate over contributions from all other reactions when the dilepton invariant mass is above 1.5 GeV.
The role of mesons, particularly the pion, in the structure of nucleons is reviewed and investigated. Since quark-antiquark pairs are likely to " transform " into mesons at large distances, mesons are expected to contribute to nucleon structure.
